We can explore various problems such as discorded eating, depression, anxiety, OCD or relationships.
Are you feeling stressed, lost, confused or anxious? These feelings may be a result of a traumatic event, pressures from work, family difficulties, addictions, obsessions or trauma. With busy lives, responsibilities and often with others depending on us, we often dismiss our feelings or fail to understand why we feel, the way we do. I offer a safe place where we can focus on you and we will work together using a therapeutic model that meets your needs. I can offer flexible appointments that fits in with your schedule and if you work shifts we can offer flexible sessions.

Counselling will mean different things to different people, and no two people will have the exact same needs or experience of counselling. For some, they may just need the time and space to be listened to without judgement, the process of just saying what is on their mind to someone independent can be therapeutic in itself. For others they may struggle to find the words to express themselves and so a counsellor might support them to express themselves more creatively perhaps through art or imagery. Some people are able to identify areas of their life that they need help with specifically and for others it is to be discovered.

Online, outdoor and face-to-face. AuDHD. “The curious paradox is that when I accept myself, just as I am, then I can change.” - Carl Rogers. I offer a safe space where you identify any learnt messages and separate them from who you really are, not who you have become by trying to conform and please the world and others. Through an ND-affirmative person-centred lens, I support you to recognise your differences, celebrate them, and understand their effect on your behaviour and feelings. You are the expert on you, but you may have just lost your voice.

I'm a therapist who believes in working with my clients to help them find perspective in times of struggle, without minimising what they are going through, without staying silent at the other end of the room and leaving you on your own to figure it out. I get that things are tough and I seek to work relationally. I can look back with you at past difficulties, things that went wrong, and I will work with you to find a way to integrate those issues so that they don't toxify and ruin the present. I also believe that choice and change are processes that can be learned and that we can manifest good things if we know how!

Hi. Deciding to try counselling can be quite a daunting experience, so I aim to provide a calm, welcoming space free of judgement for you to explore whatever issues you are facing. You may wish to make some changes in your life, or have a space to talk and make sense of things, counselling can be helpful with either. I've worked with a wide range of adult clients, with issues such as low mood, anxiety, relationship difficulties, stress, problems at work and bereavement and loss. I've also worked a lot with young people, in a school and college, also a wellbeing drop in for young people, so I'm happy to see any young person over 14.

I am a highly compassionate, non-judgemental and an experienced counselling therapist. I don’t pathologise, rather, I wonder; ‘what happened to you?’, and I provide a space where you can feel safe to be fully yourself, or perhaps explore what stops you from being your true self.

Depression Counsellors

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
