I work as an integrative counsellor specialising in, but not exclusively with, loss, anxiety, depression and relationship issues.
I am a BACP registered, qualified and experienced psychotherapist and have worked with many clients with various problems. Many people struggle with their own unique experiencing of the world, which can sometimes feel overwhelming. I am able to provide a non-clinical, non-judgemental, confidential and relaxed environment, to help you safely explore your thoughts and feelings in an attempt to help you gain an understanding and clearer insight into yourself and your problems. During therapy you will hopefully also gain some ‘tools’ to help you deal with life more effectively and in a more managable and healthier way.

EMDR is also very effective with General Anxiety, Panic attacks, Depression, Stress, Phobias, Sleep problems, Chronic pain, Body dysmorphic disorder, Medically unexplained symptoms, Addictions, Low self esteem, Performance anxiety and Attachment disorders.
I offer EMDR, CBT and Couples Counselling therapy and the aim is to help you to regain a sense of wellbeing and enjoyment in your life. During the initial assessment we will work together to understand your main problems, what is keeping you 'stuck' and then agree on an individualised treatment plan to help you move forward with clear treatment goals. CBT is an effective treatment that can help you in the here and now and EMDR is useful for getting to the root of the problem. I find that both work well, in different ways to bring about an improvement in emotional and physical health.

My aim is to help my clients live more fulfilling and positive lives. I offer a safe space where they can share their problems and receive support. Clients are met with warmth, acceptance and positivity, and their challenges are listened to and properly understood. I offer both individual and couples counselling. With individual clients, we will work to understand the origins of current challenges – like anxiety, negative thinking and depression – and develop better coping mechanisms. With relationship counselling, I help the couple to reconnect and build a stronger, healthier and sustainable relationship.

I work with clients who have depression, anxiety, panic, low self esteem, OCD, trauma, PTSD, addictions, Functional Neurological Disorders, chronic pain and chronic fatigue.
Choosing a professional to help you can be a stressful process. Many people have heard of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy but aren’t sure what it involves, and don’t know whether they need CBT, counselling or something else. That’s not a problem - I will provide an initial phone consultation to answer questions, discuss what you are looking for and establish whether CBT or counselling would be most beneficial for you. I specialise in neurodivergence, providing reports and letters for clients who are needing an ADHD referral via their GP, and providing specialised CBT and ACT for ADHD and emotional regulation problems.

The idea of talking to someone can feel really daunting, especially if you haven’t done it before and that’s ok and completely normal. Maybe you have experienced something difficult and need someone to talk to; perhaps you'd like to change the way you feel, experience and cope in certain situations; you may be finding it hard to cope with your mental health. By talking and processing your feelings and experiences it can offer a way of healing, it can offer you more mental and physical space to create a different way of being and start paving a way forward for you that you always hoped for, but may not have felt was achievable.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
