Life consists of a lot. Sometimes we may feel an overriding sense that something doesn’t feel right, or as is used to. There may be something specific that has occurred, or a general sense of not being where you want to be. It can be difficult to know where to begin when navigating questions about life; how to feel ‘yourself’ again and how to begin to reconcile the difficulties and thought processes that have led to the moment that you are in. With so much to consider it is easy to feel overwhelmed and in need of some support. I offer a warm, therapeutic space to help you explore what the next steps could look like in your world.

I’m a person-centred psychotherapist (Dip.Hons, MBACP) who works with people navigating trauma, addiction, recovery, shame, grief, and emotional overwhelm. My approach is grounded, honest, and shaped by real-life experience—including my own long-term recovery. I offer a safe, non-judgmental space to help you reconnect with yourself and move forward with clarity. I’ve worked extensively with survivors of abuse and those who feel like they’re carrying too much alone. You don’t have to face this on your own—and you don’t have to pretend to be okay here.

Hello, my name is Cara, I’m a Creative Arts Therapist and a qualified Clinical Supervisor. Maybe your child/teenager is acting out and you just don’t know what to do next, maybe they’ve been through a difficult experience recently or in the past and need some help processing what happened to them. I’ve worked with many children and I want to be able to offer your child a safe and confidential environment to explore what is going on for them right now They can then begin to feel better about themselves and continue to have the positive experiences from life that they deserve. Sometimes finding the right words to communicate is hard.

Hi, my name's Sarah and I'm a clinical psychologist. The decision to see a therapist can feel daunting and anxiety provoking. Please be reassured that this is absolutely normal. In a therapy session I will give you my support and the compassion that you may be needing at this time. My background is of a long standing NHS Professional who is dedicated to caring for others. I became a counsellor because it was an alternative way to help people and to build on a profession I love but within a different area. My focus is on creating a safe, non-judgemental and compassionate space where you can fully express, explore and experiment with any feelings, thoughts and emotions that you may be struggling with.

As humans, life can feel a bit messy for us all at times. We all experience a wide array of emotions on this journey called life, but there are times when we feel more stressed, overwhelmed, or lower in mood than usual and for longer periods of time. This can be difficult to navigate through by yourself, so you may feel talking therapy could be helpful to help understand and explore what may be going on and to help you move forward. Building awareness of our behaviours and thought processes isn’t always easy and is often avoided, but with support and compassion, I can sit with you through it.

Are you a man struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, or the quiet grief of baby loss, including miscarriage or stillbirth? You might feel stuck, tense or disconnected from yourself and the people you care about. Maybe the spark has gone. The things that once helped, football, music, time with mates or family, no longer seem to lift you. You might feel irritable, restless or constantly exhausted. Sleep can be broken. Your mind rarely switches off. You may have tried to push through, keep things bottled up and carry on alone, but it is starting to wear you down. I’m a BACP accredited men’s counsellor / EMDR therapist in Cornwall

Hello, and thanks for taking the time to look at my page. My name is Andy and I'm a qualified therapist who works in a humanistic way to offer a non-judgemental service. Whatever your needs are, we can have a chat to give you an idea of whether you feel I will be able to meet them. Please feel free to call or message me, and if I can't answer straight away, I will get back to you promptly. We can discuss what you hope to achieve from therapy and why you feel now is the time to reach out. Sometimes only a few sessions are required by my clients, others may want help over a longer period; only you know what you want.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
