Here at Sanae Mentis counselling you will be assured a safe space with which to explore your world without judgement. This is your time to bring whatever is troubling you and to know that you are not alone as I walk alongside you through what can sometimes feel painful. Counselling can at times be challenging as you delve a little deeper into your emotions but this is truly where growth can occur and therefore it is important to understand that the more you get out from this experience will largely depend on how open you can be. Alongside my Private practice, I work with clients for Betterhelp and with Wellbeing in the arts.

If you are considering having counselling then the chances are you are experiencing some sort of difficulty. This could be in relation to a major loss or disappointment, your lifestyle, relationships or life changes. It is the internal experiences which follow these life situations that can make it so difficult. Anger, stress, grief, depression, shame and anxiety being a few examples. I offer care, acceptance, and an empathic environment where you can be deeply heard and understood; this therapeutic atmosphere creates conditions for effective counselling to happen. Often talking about what is inside can bring a tremendous release.

I see clients in London (SW7 & SW5), Tunbridge Wells and online. I am a therapist, coach and wellbeing consultant and my friends joke that I wear many “hats” which is true I do and I am very grateful I get the opportunity to do so. I am an addiction, eating disorder and compulsive behaviour specialist. I trained at Richmond College as an integrative therapist and the National Centre for Eating Disorders as a Master Practitioner. I am strongly informed by 12 step philosophy and I help clients to look after their mental, physical, spiritual and emotional health to thrive in life.

Hi, my name is Liz. Welcome to my profile. I work with clients to help them really understand why they are thinking, feeling and behaving in the way they are. Past and present events and experiences influence how we feel about and therefore treat ourselves which then impacts on all relationships in our lives. By understanding where these thoughts come from and why you may have such huge emotional and physical reactions or equally such suppressed feelings you can change the way you behave towards yourself and others. I would like to help you make the changes you need so that you can lead a healthy, happy and fulfilling life

How does compassion-focused therapy work?

Compassion-Focused Therapy is based on the idea that humans have at least three emotion regulation systems, including one that responds to threats and another that allows us to self-soothe. Those who experienced serious childhood adversity, the theory goes, have a hyperactive threat system and an underperforming self-soothing system, leaving them vulnerable to shame and a hypercritical mindset. CFT focuses on bringing these systems back into balance, helping the client be kinder to themselves and better able to accept kindness from others.

Is compassion-focused therapy a type of CBT?

Compassion-focused therapy is closely related to cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and employs many of its techniques. In addition to CBT, CFT also draws from the fields of biology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and Buddhism. It also has similarities to some types of trauma-focused therapies.

Is compassion-focused therapy evidence based?

Evidence suggests that CFT can be helpful in the treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, and other mental illnesses. It has also been shown to be beneficial for individuals who may not have diagnosable psychiatric disorders but who still struggle with persistent self-criticism and feelings of shame.

What are the limitations of compassion-focused therapy?

Compassion-focused therapy is still a relatively new therapy, and research on its efficacy is still in its early stages; while some studies have found positive results, many have suffered from quality issues or small sample sizes. And while most CFT clients find it difficult to practice self-compassion at first, some—especially those who actively fear compassion or are deeply uncomfortable being cared for—may not be fully open to the tenets of CFT, potentially limiting the therapy’s long-term effectiveness.
