I am committed to helping others process distressing or troubling experiences or work out how they can feel happier or more at ease in their lives. I have plentiful experience working with anxiety and depression, trauma, those who hear voices and those who are experiencing a mental health crisis, as well as particular experience working with university age adults. I will work collaboratively with you, but believe that you are the expert on your own life, and my role is to be alongside you to provide compassionate support and a gentle challenge where appropriate to help you unpack things in a warm and non-judgemental space.

I believe that every person contains within them the potential for their own growth and healing, for moving from self-criticism to self-compassion, and for creating the change they want to experience. Therapy can realise this potential. I'm trained integratively, and work with your body and mine, and what occurs between us to access unconscious processes and facilitate change. I recognise and value the whole of you, working collaboratively to build self-awareness, decrease stress, and develop confidence, self-esteem, self-compassion and creativity, to enable more satisfying relationships, including your relationship with yourself.

The ups and downs of life can be overwhelming and can challenge your confidence. The courage it takes to seek help is the bravest step towards positive change that you can make. I understand how challenging it can be to trust someone you don't know while sharing your emotions. You will be at the heart of the process; after all, it's all about you and your wellbeing.

You might have been experiencing uncertainty and anxiety, or low self-esteem. Your life experience, or how you relate to yourself and others, may be troubling you. There could be patterns in your behaviour which you feel unable to change- history repeating itself. Possibly the ways that you have learned to see yourself and others are unhelpful, and you are want to create better relationships with yourself and others. Perhaps you are looking for another way, to give yourself time and space to explore and understand yourself better, and how to respond in life situations, relationships and work.

I hold a BA(Hons) in integrative relational counselling and a registered member of BACP. I have a number of years of experience working in the charity and private sector, supporting clients with a wide range of emotional issues. At the heart of my counselling practice is the aim to provide a space where you can come to breathe, to be, and find unconditional acceptance, positive reflection and discover alternative narratives and perspectives for yourself. A relationship that enables that to occur, allows for the development of self-awareness, self- acceptance, hope and healing.

I am a qualified, integrative counsellor with many years experience. My core modality is integrative which allows for flexibility in sessions. At the heart, is the therapeutic relationship- empathy, unconditional regard and acceptance. Psychodynamic theory looks at attachments, defences and themes from childhood that get played out in the now. TA is a theory of human interactions and helps us understand and explore past messages using such tools as the Drama triangle and the Parent-Adult-child model. This integrated mix of theory enables me to meet different needs, those which are best suited to the individual or couple.

Therapy can be a catalyst for change helping us to regain a sense of control in our lives and begin to live life more towards our true potential. I have experience of working with a wide range of issues that impact on clients' wellbeing, offering support, empathy and a safe space to share their concerns. I work with individuals, couples, families, children, young people on short and long-term contracts in Canterbury and Waltham. I use different approaches and techniques that are tailored to clients' needs, believing that we are all individual and that ‘one size does not fit all’. I have also lived and worked extensively overseas.

Compassion Focused Counsellors

How does compassion-focused therapy work?

Compassion-Focused Therapy is based on the idea that humans have at least three emotion regulation systems, including one that responds to threats and another that allows us to self-soothe. Those who experienced serious childhood adversity, the theory goes, have a hyperactive threat system and an underperforming self-soothing system, leaving them vulnerable to shame and a hypercritical mindset. CFT focuses on bringing these systems back into balance, helping the client be kinder to themselves and better able to accept kindness from others.

Is compassion-focused therapy a type of CBT?

Compassion-focused therapy is closely related to cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and employs many of its techniques. In addition to CBT, CFT also draws from the fields of biology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and Buddhism. It also has similarities to some types of trauma-focused therapies.

Is compassion-focused therapy evidence based?

Evidence suggests that CFT can be helpful in the treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, and other mental illnesses. It has also been shown to be beneficial for individuals who may not have diagnosable psychiatric disorders but who still struggle with persistent self-criticism and feelings of shame.

What are the limitations of compassion-focused therapy?

Compassion-focused therapy is still a relatively new therapy, and research on its efficacy is still in its early stages; while some studies have found positive results, many have suffered from quality issues or small sample sizes. And while most CFT clients find it difficult to practice self-compassion at first, some—especially those who actively fear compassion or are deeply uncomfortable being cared for—may not be fully open to the tenets of CFT, potentially limiting the therapy’s long-term effectiveness.
