We're often led to believe that we’re lucky to live in today's world, with all its comforts and endless opportunities, and that we should therefore not only be grateful but also feel happy and fulfilled. In reality, modern life can still be hard and overwhelming and comes with its very own challenges. Therapy can help. There are many reasons why people seek out therapy. You might know exactly what it is you would like to work on, or you might feel lost, unsure where to start. My main treatment approaches are Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) and EMDR.
I am passionate about helping clients intercept 'stuck' cycles by finding new ways of adjusting and coping. Many of the clients that I work with find themselves struggling with life demands or what the World Health Organisation (WHO) typically defines as 'burn-out' (ICD-10). Quite often they feel overwhelmed, depleted and unable to find an obvious solution to their problem. They find themselves chronically ruminating about the past or worrying about the future, leading to vicious cycles of depression and anxiety. These clients require a specialised therapist who can offer brief, effective treatment.

I work predominately using CBT, but enjoy bringing in ACT and psychodynamic approaches to enrich the work with my clients.
A warm welcome, if you're looking here then it might mean you're ready to start talking to someone about the difficulties you're experiencing. This is a big first step, and it can be a daunting to know who to speak to. I have over ten years experience working in NHS mental health services - I don't believe that people fit into neat diagnoses but that we all sit on a spectrum somewhere between good mental health to distress and this changes depending on what stress is placed on us. I am interested in how you have got to this point and focus on what we can do together to help you move forward and make powerful positive change.

I am a qualified accredited CBT and EMDR therapist, currently working within an NHS talking therapies service, also offering private therapy. I pride myself in creating a safe, warm, and non-judgemental space, where we can navigate problems together. CBT therapy is an excellent talking therapy - focusing on how our beliefs about ourselves, others and the world, influence how we think, feel and behave. Often it is not what happens to us, it is the meaning we take from events which causes suffering.

I also use CBT for anxiety, low mood and depression.
I have worked in the NHS for 25 years, across a variety of settings and am currently undertaking an MA in Family Therapy. Neuro-biology and Somatic psychology are also areas that inform my practice. This includes helping individuals to understand choices around mental health medication, how the body and mind are 'one' and are both informed by the 'fight or flight' response, attachment styles and survival strategies. I use NVR (Non-Violent Resolution) to support families and young people with challenging behaviours.

CBT can be an incredibly effective form of therapy for Depression, Anxiety and many other issues.
Life can be tough sometimes and we can easily find ourselves stuck in cycles of unhelpful thinking or behaving. My aim is to help you to become unstuck and access a healthier, happier version of yourself. You may not know exactly how or why things aren't working, so an initial assessment can help us to figure this out together. I believe that we all possess the knowledge and resources to address our problems - I see my role as helping you to unlock this knowledge, access these skills, and acquire some additional tools along the way.

Cognitive Behavioural (CBT) Counsellors

How does cognitive behavioural therapy work?

Cognitive behavioural therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophising or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioural therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioural therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioural therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
