About

I am a psychotherapist and group analyst and have been a therapist for nearly 30 years in many different settings. In my approach, I am interested in making connections between experiences and difficulties in the present, with events and relationships from the past. In my experience, difficulties people experience as adults can often be part of a repeated pattern. I will be curious about relationships in your life but also the way you relate to yourself and to others. This will include how it is in the therapy relationship - whether individually or group.
I am particularly interested in the family background of my clients whether I am seeing them in a group or individually. I work in an interactive and non-judgemental way. I think all good therapy needs to offer both insight and a different (sometimes called corrective) emotional experience. I strongly believe in and adhere to professional ethics.
It takes courage to reach out for therapy. There are many feelings and anxieties for those particularly at the start. Entering into a therapeutic relationship involves trusting a stranger and revealing private, perhaps shameful, thoughts and feelings. This is paramount for me, as the therapist, to always keep in mind in my work.

Claire Barnes's Groups

Brighton & Hove Therapy Group - Thursday AM

A new psychotherapy group starting in the autumn in Hove, UK. We will be meeting face to face and the group will run for 90 minutes. A free telephone consultation is offered for anyone interested in exploring further. The approach is group analytic and draws from psychoanalysis, family therapy, sociology and attachment based therapy. The group is kept safe and therapeutic through emphasis on boundaries, for e.g. confidentiality and anonymity. For further information about my group approach please check out my blogs on groups at Brighton and Hove Psychotherapy blogs page - please google for website.
