I have experience in supporting people of all ages, who have brought a wide range of issues, including: bereavement, relationship difficulties, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, addictions, self-harm, redundancy, illness and caring responsibilities.
Working from a shepherds hut, in a peaceful, rural location, I offer both short term and long term counselling. People come to counselling for many reasons, allowing yourself some time and space to talk can help you understand the causes of your unhappiness, distress, anxiety or feelings of disconnection. Being able to link feelings to your patterns of behaviour or ways of relating with others, can help you make sense of certain aspects of your life. Counselling can empower you by helping you make sense of what is happening, deal with painful thoughts, and enable you to make the changes you need to move forward.

I have a specialist interest in working with people who have suffered or are suffering abuse. Abuse can happen to anyone, any gender any age any type such as physical, emotional, sexual and even financial. I will create a safe environment where it is warm and non judgemental. I will be open and genuine so we are able to work towards growth, change and your full potential. We can do this by talking, or creatively by art or a sand tray, which can bridge what is going on in the unconscious to the conscious to then become aware of what may be holding us back.

Our early relationships and environments can often lead us to over identify with and internalise the projections, expectations, and demands of others. Therapy offers a place for you to get to know and become reacquainted with your internal world. Over time, the therapeutic process may not only illuminate your conscious, but your unconscious narratives, to reveal a deeper understanding and connection with a more authentic sense of who you are in the present and how you relate to the world.

Past, often traumatic, experiences can cause our brain to become overprotective and hyper-vigilant, now causing symptoms such as anxiety and pain.
Hello, I’m Cat (she/they), and I’m a humanistic counselling therapist. Contacting a counsellor can be scary, I know, I’ve been there too. I would like to offer a warm welcome to you, just as you are right now. There are many reasons why people seek counselling. Perhaps you are feeling different or disconnected from other people and the world around you. Maybe you feel like you don’t fit in, you’re lonely, or you find relationships difficult or confusing. Sometimes as humans we get stuck, anxious or depressed and need some support through difficult times.

As an integrative psychotherapist I specialise in the treatment of complex mental illness that may be attributed to childhood sexual abuse, physical/emotional/mental abuse experienced during childhood or early adulthood, unaddressed grief and/or complicated trauma.
Life today seems to be overloaded by a variety of stress in many spheres of existence. What should be enjoyable and fulfilling sometimes turns out to be the very cause of suffering. In the midst of the busy-ness of life, we do not take the time to address this suffering and instead criticise and blame ourselves or others. This could potentially leave us feeling confused and ashamed. Shame does not heal the pain of suffering. Every human being has a need to be understood, accepted and validated because the human brain is wired to love and be loved.

Therapy can be transformative - so why struggle alone? Whether you are in deep emotional pain, anxious, stressed or perhaps frustrated with your life, exploring the issues in a safe setting can be empowering. In a world that can feel frantic yet lonely, it's hard to dedicate time to yourself. But you are important: you deserve an opportunity to reassess 'how you got here', to be more self-aware and find ways to be truly happy. I offer the chance to be really heard - with empathy and without judgement - in total confidence. We'll work together to understand what is troubling you at a depth, duration and pace that feel right to you.

Chronic Pain Counsellors

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
