Do you find yourself derailed by relationship anxiety, despite being successful or confident in other areas of your life? This experience is called anxious attachment. It stems from past relationship experiences and makes it difficult to feel secure in relationships. Your feeling of not being “good enough” causes not only temporary emotional pain, but can interfere with nearly all areas of your life. But the good news is that it is possible to overcome attachment anxiety and feel more loved, secure, and confident.

Are you distrustful, fearful and overwhelmed by your own emotions and sensations? Do you wish you could eliminate them? Issues arising from trauma or early attachment may manifest in a number of ways including painful thoughts and memories, anxiety, depression, rage, physical pain and sensations (including unexplained physical symptoms, CFS, fibromyalgia and low energy). By viewing our thoughts, sensations, feelings and behaviours not as symptoms, but as 'parts' of us which are attempting to cope with life, we can learn about, and work with them in a compassionate and non-pathologising way.

It stops difficult memories causing so much distress by helping the brain to reprocess them properly, working with memory to heal the legacy of past pain.
Website www.brainmindpsychotherapy.com I specialise in working with clients with PTSD and trauma based symptoms. I also work with OCD and other mental health problem, through the use of CBT & EMDR. CBT works by the theory that we can manage and modulate our emotions through evaluating/changing our cognitions & behaviours accordingly. EMDR utilises bilateral stimulation (eye movements) to aid the reprocessing of symptoms of Trauma and PTSD, focusing on trauma memories whilst integrating and updating these with Adaptive Information Processing, aiding resolution of symptoms in the present

I have worked in the NHS for over 20 years and I realise that therapy can be a new and unusual approach for people. I often work with folk who are finding things hard, and need a neutral form of support. I can offer direct support, teaching and practice in cognitive and behavioural techniques, or relaxation and mindfulness ideas to help. The goals that a person wants to work towards might be crystal clear to them, or they might refine these as we work together.

Hi, my name is Jane Blackburn. If you're reading this, you’ve probably found that life isn’t always as straight-forward as we’d like and that it can really take a toll on each of us. I have experience supporting people facing all sorts of challenges in their lives including: anxiety, stress, depression, panic attacks, difficulties expressing themselves, low self-esteem, and relationship difficulties, to name but a few. I can even support you if you just feel a little bit ‘off’, as though things are ‘not quite right’. The first step towards making a positive change is to ask for help, even if that feels daunting to do.

Clients generally come to me when they are struggling with some aspect of their emotions, thoughts or behaviour. My aim is to help my client with accepting or changing some aspect of these three areas. Every client comes with unique issues and from my seat I view the issues as one, "a block in the road to wellness". I am keenly aware that all clients come with individual goals and I am here to help. Many of my clients use the phrase “I just want to feel better". This is my hope for everyone who engages with me in therapy. “TO FEEL BETTER” I offer confidentiality, openness and transparency at all times.

I am a relaxed and friendly BACP Accredited Counsellor, working from my private practice in Paignton, Devon. I understand the importance of a comfortable, safe space for clients to share and I can draw on my extensive integrative training to tailor the sessions to meet your needs. Whilst the present moment is key to change, I understand how the past can impact the present, as can concerns about the future. It can be hard to learn, but it is often harder to unlearn.

Do you feel stuck, anxious or overwhelmed? Perhaps worry, lack of confidence or low self esteem is having a negative effect on your life, causing you to feel isolated and alone. Talking to loved one about what we are experiencing can feel difficult, we worry that we are putting to much on them or we don't want them to worry about us. Talking to a counsellor can be really helpful at these times and can show a way forward. However I understand that a good counselling relationship is vital to support you in moving toward your goals.

Chronic Pain Counsellors

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
