I understand that undertaking Counselling can be daunting - uncovering difficult feelings can be overwhelming and painful. I strongly believe that every person should have the opportunity to live their best possible life and realise their true potential. We all have periods where we struggle with ourselves, with our feelings and emotions, with our lives. We can experience the darkest of thoughts and feel very isolated, all too often believing we are alone in our suffering. That need not be the case, and with some support and nurturing, we can begin to feel stronger and look towards the future, rather than away from it. My name is Emma and I can offer you a warm yet professional and non-judgemental approach to counselling in a safe, calm space. I use an integrated , client-led approach derived not only from my years of training, but also from a wealth of life experience.

Do you struggle with your emotions? Do you find yourself feeling moody and irritable? Maybe you are battling with high levels of anxiety that is ruining your life. Maybe you’re feeling sad and depressed robbing you of enjoyment in your life. Do you experience a range of intense emotions in a short space of time and slow to get back to “normal”? Do you end up having angry outbursts then feel full of regret afterwards? Do your relationships suffer as a result of intense emotions? Have you developed coping strategies that whilst in the moment might help but longer term are causing additional issues?

I have a great deal of experience helping people with depression, anxiety, chronic pain and complex trauma.
I have over 18 years' experience as a senior specialist psychotherapist and counsellor in the NHS. My approach to both psychological and physiological suffering is to help patients work through their often long-standing personal difficulties, whilst promoting self-acceptance and committed action. An assumption I bring to my clinical practice is that most people want to live their lives in a direction of their choosing and in a way that reflects their personal values. As a therapist, my main focus is on those things that keep us 'stuck', that make it difficult for us to feel connected to the people and things that matter to us.

I also specialise in working with people with long-term illness, acquired disability, and chronic pain.
Life can be a struggle; the things other people seem able to deal with can leave us feeling exhausted, demoralised, and desperate. Finding someone to talk to can be difficult because friends and family always have an opinion and can often make us feel judged or inadequate. As a person-centred counsellor I know that you are the expert in your own life; only you know how you feel. Talking to someone who is actively listening to you, who makes no judgement, and accepts you for who you are, can be transformative. Not only does it make you feel heard and validated, it can help you to better emotional and physical health

Whilst having a support network is very important, speaking to somebody who is trained to sit in the midst of pain with you and support you in your healing journey can be incredibly helpful.
Sometimes life can prove truly relentless. We have all experienced times when several challenges have simultaneously knocked at our door, perhaps when there is already so much we are holding for ourselves and our loved ones. Perhaps you are battling with a lack of meaning and purpose, relationship or work issues, climate grief, addiction. Maybe you feel isolated, lost in a fast-changing world that does not match your values, or stuck in recurring patterns that are no longer serving you. It could be that you are experiencing anxiety, depression, anger, suicidal thoughts, and you do not quite know what to do with them.

Whether you are struggling with a specific issue, or are just looking for more meaning, psychotherapy can help you make sense of your past and present situation, approach your life and relationships with more awareness, self-esteem, direction and purpose, and let go of the pain of the past.
I am a UKCP qualified Integrative Psychotherapist (UKCP) and Chartered Counselling Psychologist (DCPsych, CPsychol.). Everyone deserves to have someone in their lives who can listen compassionately and hold a space of non-judgemental understanding. I try to offer that space, first and foremost. While doing this, I seek to understand where things may have been difficult and hold in mind your potential for growth and change. The underlying core of my approach is based on respecting your needs and safety, as well as helping you bring out your innate wisdom and strengths.

Chronic Pain Counsellors

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
