I also have a specialist interest and experience in working with eating disorders (including a wide range of food and body related issues) and people coping with physical health conditions such as chronic pain and diabetes.
It can be hard to know where to go or who to see for help, with so many different professionals and types of therapy available. I know it can be daunting especially if you or a loved one are distressed. I am an experienced, trusted Senior Clinical Psychologist who has worked for the NHS since 2004 and I can help you work through it. I have many years experience in helping people gain an understanding of their difficulties and the evidenced-based approaches that can work for their individual needs. I can offer specialist assessment and treatment to suit your individual needs in a compassionate and non-judgemental environment.

Hi there, welcome to my profile. You might have arrived here with a clear sense of what hurts, or are struggling to understand what is difficult. You may be lost, stuck, or scared. You might be going through an important transition in your life. You may be reading this under some distress and are considering taking the next step to work on that suffering. Perhaps you are experiencing oppressions that leave you feeling marginalised and worn down. You may face difficulties relating to neurodiversity. The above factors (amongst others) may contribute to a sense of feeling out of place, both within yourself and in relationships.

Hello, my name is Sarah. I am a qualified Person Centred Counsellor working in the Nottingham area. It is often said that choosing to seek help and support through counselling is the hardest step. I agree, and would say it is the bravest decision, often made at the most difficult of times. I believe the Counselling room should be a place where you can discuss the issues of greatest importance to you, in confidence and without fear of judgement. Because I am passionate about the work a client and I do I offer a reduced rate for the initial consultation, believing that our working alliance is the key ingredient to success

My ideal client is one that has a specific goal in mind that we can collaboratively work on. Your goal could be anything from stress management, emotional resilience building, behavioural change, to phobias and habit reversal. You would be open to learning new coping skills to help obtain your target. It's likely you have been let down by therapeutic services before and are looking for a way to be your own therapist through a short term transformation, rather than spending 1000s of hours in session indefinitely. On average, my clients feel results in as little as 3, 1 to 1.5 hour sessions. https:/www.Privatereflectiontherapy.co.uk

Chronic Pain Counsellors

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
