Hi I'm Charlotte and I'm a therapist that specialises in working with disabled people and people with chronic illnesses. I primarily do telephone and online counselling.

I also specialise in working with people with long-term illness, acquired disability, and chronic pain.
Life can be a struggle; the things other people seem able to deal with can leave us feeling exhausted, demoralised, and desperate. Finding someone to talk to can be difficult because friends and family always have an opinion and can often make us feel judged or inadequate. As a person-centred counsellor I know that you are the expert in your own life; only you know how you feel. Talking to someone who is actively listening to you, who makes no judgement, and accepts you for who you are, can be transformative. Not only does it make you feel heard and validated, it can help you to better emotional and physical health

I have worked in the NHS as Lead for Chronic Pain Management since 2015.
Maybe you are struggling at present to understand why things are the way they are? Sometimes we can all get stuck in patterns of relating, both with ourselves and others, that are not the most helpful or productive. Sometimes this means our relationships might suffer, or our life, career and family choices. Having therapy with an experienced practitioner can help you. Therapy is about building a shared understanding of what you are facing. If you are struggling with trauma, family issues, career issues, relationships, abuse, coping difficulties, I can help. I am also happy working with children and adolescents

It can be hard to even begin to know and articulate what is causing us emotional pain but talking to a therapist who has a skilled and compassionate ear can help us ackowledge, process and move forward from the distressing feelings that are holding us back.
Life can sometimes be difficult and we may find ourselves struggling and feeling anxious, depressed and unconfident. We may find ourselves battling with the feelings evoked by loss, due to bereavement, relationship breakdown or even the children leaving home. Counselling is not a magic cure, but talking to an empathic, skilled therapist can help; fostering both the processing of difficult feelings and resilience to better deal with what life throws at us, enabling us to move forward. The effect of just being listened to by those who have hitherto struggled to be heard can be both powerful and empowering.

Do you feel overwhelmed, unsafe and lonely? Are you finding elements of your life a struggle and don't know where to turn? Can you no longer see the wood for the trees and have lost direction? Many people lose touch with the person they are supposed to be for many reasons and seek to find their true selves again but may just need a helping hand and support along the way. Counselling can be the first step back to removing the barriers which have kept you lost and help you back on the path you were intended to follow.

Thank you for visiting my profile, navigating life can sometimes feel overwhelming. You may be struggling with feeling anxious or depressed. Maybe you struggle to prioritise yourself, always taking care of others needs ahead of your own, leaving you running on empty. Perhaps you feel overly responsible for others, always trying to fix their problems. Maybe past experiences have left you feeling ashamed, empty and unsure of who you are. Sometimes we need help to work through life’s challenges. I work with adults individually online and in person, gently helping them to make sense of their difficulties and find a way forwards.

I am taking a sabbatical from the end of May 2024 so will only be offering short term work until then. I offer counselling and psychotherapy for children, young people, parents and adults. Young people can often have worries that they find hard to talk to their parents about. Talking to someone outside the family can often make all the difference. I offer space for parents to talk about their worries and work on their parenting strategies. Sometimes I work with a parent and child together if there are particular relationship issues. I also work with adults for individual problems.

Clients have come to me for many different reasons. From dealing with past traumas, connecting with their emotions and understanding their reactions, to working on a better sense of self and building confidence. Each client comes to therapy seeking a safe and non-judgmental space to unpack their thoughts and emotions. They often come because they don't feel heard in their day-to-day life, or need somewhere to explore emotions without fear of reactions or feelings of guilt.

Do you struggle with your emotions? Do you find yourself feeling moody and irritable? Maybe you are battling with high levels of anxiety that is ruining your life. Maybe you’re feeling sad and depressed robbing you of enjoyment in your life. Do you experience a range of intense emotions in a short space of time and slow to get back to “normal”? Do you end up having angry outbursts then feel full of regret afterwards? Do your relationships suffer as a result of intense emotions? Have you developed coping strategies that whilst in the moment might help but longer term are causing additional issues?

We all have periods where we struggle with ourselves, with our feelings and emotions, with our lives. We can experience the darkest of thoughts and feel very isolated, all too often believing we are alone in our suffering. That need not be the case, and with some support and nurturing, we can begin to feel stronger and look towards the future, rather than away from it. My name is Emma and I can offer you a warm yet professional and non-judgemental approach to counselling in a safe, calm space. I use an integrated , client-led approach derived not only from my years of training, but also from a wealth of life experience.

Chronic Pain Counsellors

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
