I work with a wide range of issues some of which include: depression, trauma, anger, anxiety, stress, addictions, bereavement, illness, men's issues, motherhood, women's issues, retirement, work stress, loss and relationship conflict.
I understand it can be hard to approach therapy for the first time, or maybe you are currently in need of support during an uncertain time or are feeling distressed. It can feel difficult knowing where to start. We would work together to explore your feelings, thoughts and behaviours so you can better understand yourself and others. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy can support you and give you understanding about your emotional responses to life events and insight to help cope in times of stress. I offer a safe and confidential space, where you can begin to make sense of your feelings and to identify how you would like to move forward.

Sometimes we lose our way a little in life. Perhaps there are aspects in your life that are causing you anxiety, distress, or preventing you from moving forward? In a world full of uncertainty we can often feel overwhelmed, fearful and unsure where to move next. Redundancy, illness, relationship issues, depression and anxiety can often leave us feeling unsafe and lost, and sometimes we just need a helping hand in working through these emotions and patterns in order to start to make sense of the world and ourselves again.

I work with all sorts of people, but have particular experience working with social marginalisation, unconventional lifestyles, illness and disability, adverse childhood events and their present impact on relating.
I offer a mixture of exploration, insight and gentle challenge to help those I work with understand their lives and interpersonal worlds in greater depth. I draw from a range of perspectives, including contemporary relational psychoanalysis and practical here-and-now interventions, to help couples and individuals identify and grapple with longstanding struggles and patterns they don’t want to keep repeating.

It’s a massive privilege to be trusted by someone who is sharing their pain and distress and to be able to offer support and help through shared communication.
I’m a psychotherapist and I’ve been working with people for 20+ years . The most important thing is to establish a really good understanding between me and my client. It involves really listening to the person front of me and making sure we communicate with each other. I believe counselling is about helping someone gain a voice, be heard and also gain strategies to manage. We can talk about any issue that is troubling the person- loss, abandonment, bereavement, anxiety- the whole range of human emotions. Focussed, short term work can be amazingly effective .

I have a great deal of experience helping people with depression, anxiety, chronic pain and complex trauma.
I have over 18 years' experience as a senior specialist psychotherapist and counsellor in the NHS. My approach to both psychological and physiological suffering is to help patients work through their often long-standing personal difficulties, whilst promoting self-acceptance and committed action. An assumption I bring to my clinical practice is that most people want to live their lives in a direction of their choosing and in a way that reflects their personal values. As a therapist, my main focus is on those things that keep us 'stuck', that make it difficult for us to feel connected to the people and things that matter to us.

Above all, I practice in a humanistic manner that recognises pain and suffering to be a natural part of the human condition across the life-span.
Welcome to my profile. There is always a good reason why people seek psychological therapy but each individual is unique in their needs, experiences or goals. Whether you are looking for symptom relief, to overcome psychological distress or past trauma, to strengthen your sense of self and form more satisfying relationships, or to otherwise explore your life experiences and gain insight into your intrapsychic world, psychological therapy is well-suited to all these diverse needs. Aspiring to psychic growth and self-actualisation are also important parameters of psychological therapy.

Chronic Pain Counsellors

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
