I am committed to working with clients who are struggling with their emotional wellbeing. These difficulties can cause difficulties in relationships, at work and on a person's experiences of connecting with themselves and the world around them. I work sensitively and supportively with clients who have experienced a number of difficult life experiences including grief, trauma, relationship difficulties to name but a few. I can help you to feel like you develop a better more compassionate understanding of yourself and help you to feel like you are moving forward in life rather than feeling stuck and directionless.

As an integrative practitioner I call upon a range of concepts and therapeutic tools to help clients deal with dysfunctional ways of feeling, behaving and living. My principle belief is that despite the problems we encounter, we all have the capacity for change. sometimes this is hard to visualise, difficult to accept. problems can appear overwhelming and insurmountable. By working in collaboration with clients, as partner's with a common purpose, unhealthy rules for living and core beliefs can be challenged, this can lead clients to happier more fulfilling ways of being that reach into our untapped potential.

We all experience losses in life – not just when someone dies but when we lose anything that is important to us: our relationships, our dreams of having a family, our health, our home, our job, our independence, our pets, and our hopes or expectations. Often, we are able to grieve for those losses and adjust but sometimes we are left feeling anxious, depressed, overwhelmed, angry, guilty, ashamed, withdrawn, or numb for many months or even years later. Adjusting to losses in life is not about ‘getting over’ them but about finding ways to live a life that includes them.

We all face Challenges and internal conflicts at some point in our lives; there are three solutions to every problem; Accept it, change it or leave it. If you are reading this profile you are probably on the road of wanting change, you don't have to struggle in silence and the time for change is now. The most important ingredient of change is the acknowledgment of the situation.Sometimes it can be very hard to explain what is going on in your head or your heart when you don't even understand it yourself , this is where speaking to someone with decades of experience makes a difference.

Often our anxieties and difficulties can weigh us down and we are unable to find a way forward. Our thoughts and feelings can be confusing and talking to friends and relatives about our concerns may be too difficult. I provide a confidential, safe, respectful and non-judgemental space in which you can explore your difficulties, gain insight and discover a way forward. I provide a counselling relationship where you are heard, understood and accepted. This is extremely powerful because it allows you to open up and express all of your thoughts and feelings and gain a new awareness which leads to the potential for positive change.

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
