We all experience emotional pain; as an infant, a child, a teenager, a parent and an adult. Whether it’s in response to life events (e.g. loss, trauma, moves), transitions (e.g. to adolescents, as a parent, retirement), adjustment to ill health (e.g. cancer, chronic illness, injury) or life in general (e.g. long term low mood or anxiety). Accepting that we need help and support can be hard and daunting. Getting the right help is important and can teach you how to live a fulfilling life.

I've seen first hand how supportive Art Psychotherapy can be. Dealing with all that life can throw at us can leave us feeling helpless, anxious, low and stuck. I work with individuals from all walks of life and different stages, experiencing difficulties such as anxiety, chronic illness, grief and loss to support them in feeling better emotionally. Art Psychotherapy helps engage the brain and body a little differently through creativity, art and image making, in addition to talking. Together, we can create a healing therapeutic environment where stories can be shared, emotions processed, and holistic wellbeing fostered.

At Yorkhill Childrens’ Hospital, Cross House Paediatic Unit and Glasgow Royal Infirmary, I helped children and adults manage illness, pain and invasive treatments. In Maternity & Neonatal Services, I supported couples during pregnancy, after traumatic birth and loss and supported families with babies in SCBU and ICU. I've worked in Adult Services, both in community mental health services and alongside the medical profession in hospitals. I worked for more than six years at the Canniesburn Plastic Surgery and Burns unit supporting individuals with poor body image, changes in functioning due to illness or injury and PTSD.

From childhood we are given messages about the ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ ways to feel, think and behave – messages that can teach us that we must hide or supress aspects of our authentic selves in order to be acceptable to others. If you’re an LGBTQ+ person, your sexuality and gender might completely unrelated to what has brought you to counselling, but you still want to know that your therapist will affirm these parts of you. In my online therapy room, you are invited to be your whole uncensored self in the company of somebody who values you unconditionally and really listens. I am a queer therapist with trauma informed training.

Life can be emotionally challenging. You may be experiencing low self-esteem, having difficulty managing emotions or feeling dissatisfied in your relationships. You may be struggling following one or multiple traumatic experiences or may be having difficulty coping with life or the loss of someone. Often, it can be hard to know exactly what is impacting on your mental health or put this into words. I believe that everyone can benefit from having a safe and confidential space to explore difficult thoughts, beliefs, emotions and behaviour that is impacting on your mental health.

Life can throw up many challenges which can cause us to feel unsettled, upset and confused. Having someone to talk with can help to untangle and make sense of the emotions that are associated with the circumstances you are facing. I place value in the therapeutic relationship and offer a safe, confidential space for you to explore whatever you are grappling with. I commit to being fully present and believe that counselling can enable you to gain greater self understanding. I love seeing clients go from struggling to thriving and accompanying them on that journey is a real privilege. I do both short and long term work.

The idea of my approach is an integrative one: I've studied, and I'm qualified to deliver, a mixed modality of therapies to address client issues. From psychodynamic active listening and using a safe space to get things out in the open, or perhaps using CBT techniques to address something specific, either way - I'm equipped to help guide you through what it is that is troubling you, or holding you back, from moving forward.

We all face difficult times throughout our lives and sometimes we feel stuck. Seeking help is a good indication of wanting to improve. Working together we will look for ways to overcome the obstacles and find emotional balance again. In therapy, I use an integrative approach, which involves the use of a variety of methods in my practice. These include person-centered, solution-focused brief therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy, among other approaches.

Chronic Illness Counsellors

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
