By combining my therapeutic models, I am able to provide a unique approach for each client which will help you to gain insight into your issue, enabling you to bring about change. The therapy lies in the realationship between the client and counsellor, where trust and respect is developed and at the centre of each session, and is integral in the way I work. I have experience working with adults and young people, helping with a wide range of issues. Therapy offered can be either short or long term at flexible times during the day and evening depending on the needs/requirements for each client.

I love helping people to find out more about themselves and recognise their worth. I know that understanding your struggles can be confusing and stressful, but I also know that there’s hope. This can involve helping you to explore your own issues, history, feelings, beliefs, behaviour, values and worldview, so you can become more self-aware and confident in making your own choices. I won't try to 'fix' you or tell you what to do but can help you see that you have options. With the right support, I believe you can make sense of what's happening for you now and get back to feeling like yourself again.

I'm trained and experienced in helping young people (13+) and adults who are struggling with their mental health, and in gently assisting them in their search for the roots of those feelings. I work closely with LGBTQ+ folk, and with those who are and/or love neurodivergent people (ASD, ADHD, AuDHD, etc). I'm also an experienced School Counsellor, a role I greatly enjoy. I'm trauma-informed, anti-oppressive and culturally attuned. We will use your personal values and beliefs as our reference points during therapy, so that we can safely explore what's going on for you from the only appropriate perspective: your own.

I am a psychodynamic psychotherapist based in Wokingham. My approach is psychoanalytic - this kind of therapy is based on the idea that what we experience as a difficulty in the present may point to an unconscious problem with roots in the past. You may find you are struggling with depression, anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, self-destructive behaviour or difficulties in relationships and want to have a better understanding of what underpins these issues.

My approach to therapy is friendly, respectful & totally non-judgemental. Primarily I use an Integrative Therapy based on TTM ( Transtheoretical Model of Change) based (between others) on your goals, readiness to change and the fact that ‘no one type of therapy fits all’. Psychoeducation about your symptoms, coping strategies (CBT and Mindfulness') will improve your everyday life and if you feel ready to work on the 'the roots' of the current difficulties- EMDR, Counselling and Attachment Theory would be something to explore. I adjust therapy to my clients and not the other way around.

I am experienced Psychologist, Counsellor and Psychotherapist, fully registered and acccredited by UKCP (UK Council for Psychotherapy). As we all know, life is certainly a journey that is not always easy to travel on alone. Most of my clients describe me as being warm and empathic and consider that the process of therapy and my non-judgemental attitude has helped them get a deeper understanding of themselves and their experiences.

If you are feeling anxious, depressed, have experienced a loss or bereavement, or there are simply too many life-events happening at once, come and talk to me. Discussing your thoughts will help to put them into perspective and make them less overwhelming. Often, we don't like to approach those closest to us as we may feel they might judge us by what we say, or be offended or upset. This is the time when talking to a therapist is most beneficial. I will be there just for you, to help you review your feelings, understand their basis, and find the best way to improve your situation.

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
