Hello, I am David, an experienced qualified Pluralistic counsellor. I believe no single counselling approach will fit every client and presenting issue. Person-centred and psychodynamic in outlook and attitude, I tailor my approach to each client, using the therapeutic approach that best addresses and resolves the client's problems. At the heart of my counselling style is the belief clients heal through exploring how their issues arose, where these come from, and crucially how to make the changes needed to feel at ease with themselves. I help clients do this by moving away from people-pleasing to being true to themselves.

Whatever is bothering you ... it matters! - If it's causing you sleepless nights, it's a problem. Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health. Therapy is absolutely here for the big crises or trauma's in your life, and so it should be - but it's not just for those ... you may be thinking your issue is not important enough, or big enough, or serious enough to bring to therapy - but actually talking about it and getting it out of your head can really help. ... It's better to catch it early than wait for it to actually become a crisis. I’m a safe pair of hands for either.

If you need to find some space to talk to someone about your situation please contact me and I should be able to offer you an appointment within a few days. I provide a free, 30-minute no obligation consultation in which we can look at your main concerns. Whether therapy can help depends, in my opinion, on the relationship between us and how comfortable and safe you feel. I am also available by phone, Google meet or Teams.

Psychotherapy literally means to nurse the soul deriving its name from the ancient Greeks understanding of human nature and the psyche. Psychotherapy occurs when a therapist meets with a client in a private and confidential setting to explore any difficulties the client is having or the distress he or she may be experiencing, a general dissatisfaction with life where an explanation is not readily known, a loss of a sense of direction or purpose. It is a common misconception that only individuals who experience mental health problems require psychotherapy. In fact Psychotherapy is of great value to anyone.

I use my skills developed through my training in CBT and EMDR and significant career to help individuals with problems such as OCD, PTSD, Depression, Social Anxiety or Health Anxiety. Often individuals are aware of the difficulties but are not sure where to start. Having motivation and an open curiousness about the process supports the gains individuals can make in therapy. With my extensive skills I assess to find out what the main problems are, taking the view that the individual is an expert in what they are experiencing. I work in a collaborative way to find a solution to reduce the impact of the symptoms on their life.

My psychotherapy philosophy is that everyone has the resources within themselves to find meaning, purpose and fulfilment in their lives. Sometimes we need some help in accessing these internal resources. If you find yourself feeling stuck, depressed or anxious possibly from external life events, problematic relationship issues, or other internal psychological struggles which may be more difficult to understand, you may find it helpful to speak to a counsellor. Talking about issues of concern in a confidential environment can lead to greater understanding, more self awareness and clarity about best ways forward.

Psychotherapy can help support you with a range of concerns. You could be feeling troubled by something in your life. You could be feeling low or anxious, perhaps from a bereavement, trauma or abuse. You may find it difficult to sustain healthy relationships. You may be experiencing chronic pain, an addiction to something that is doing you harm, or trying to come to terms with a frightening medical diagnosis. You may also hope to understand and love yourself and others better, to become more authentic, to understand the pain of being human, or to seek spiritual fulfilment.

Is this you? Is your mind clouded all the time, have you got 200 things running through your head, do you struggle to concentrate, find it hard to make decisions?   Do you doubt yourself lots, low-confidence, negative thoughts, think more of others than yourself?   Are you living in the past, grieving loved ones, not dealing with your problems, involved in toxic relationships?   Is it time to stop and think about your mental health and wellbeing?

Perhaps something has shifted in your thoughts/feelings/behaviour that’s uncomfortable, or maybe you’ve decided to explore a long-standing issue. I help my clients (individuals and couples) achieve their therapeutic goals either by discussing their current or past issues through counselling/psychotherapy or some clients also opt to have hypnotherapy with me too (you can read about that on my website). I offer empathy, confidentiality, safety and opportunity to explore their feelings in a therapeutic relationship. I'm not here to pass judgement or advise but instead I'm here to help you navigate the highs and lows.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
