Life can feel like you're barely keeping your head above water when you’re dealing with big changes, uncertainty, or emotional strain. It’s tempting to do nothing, convincing yourself that staying small is the safest option—but deep down, you know it’s not. It just leaves you stuck and alone. These moments creep up, showing as stress, overwhelm, fear, or anxiety that grows and can get too much. You might even notice it physically—the tension, the sleepless nights, the fatigue—or mentally through low mood, anxiety or both, as if your mind is on a loop, replaying the same worries.

There are many different reasons why you may feel it is time to reach out; perhaps you feel stuck but are not quite sure why, you struggle with relationships or live in the shadow of past events. There is no such thing as a problem that is too small, too big or too ‘strange.’ You may have been finding things difficult for a long time or you may have experienced a sudden upheaval in your life. Either way, alongside my training and my own life experience I provide a safe and supportive space in which to confront the issues that you face.

Having put my own psychological difficulties behind me many years ago, I am grateful that I am able to help other human beings move on in life. So how can we turn crisis into opportunity and difficulties into resilience? Difficulties such as stress, anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, low confidence, mood issues, post traumatic stress and depression etc. I am interested in people with a “difficult diagnosis” or described as a "difficult case". I am also interested in people described as autistic or neurodivergent. About eighty percent of my clients are satisfied in eight sessions or less.

Do you often feel out of step with the world, exhausted by trying to fit in or keep up? You may be autistic or have ADHD, formally diagnosed or self-recognised, and perhaps are only beginning to understand how your neurodivergence has shaped your life experience. You might also be navigating patterns that no longer serve you such as overworking, relying on substances, or constantly pushing yourself - coping strategies that may have once helped you get by but now leave you feeling depleted, stuck, or disconnected from yourself.

I continue to be deeply interested in understanding the unique struggle each of us undergo throughout our lives, sometimes more than once. In providing a safe, facilitating environment within which a process of unfolding, unlearning and enabling new self-learning, then an exploration can take place between us. Through greater understanding of our innermost self, together we can begin to allow the possibility for change.

On the outside, life might look okay — but inside, it feels like something’s off. Maybe you’re overwhelmed, anxious, stuck in the same frustrating cycles, or just tired of holding it all together. You might not even know exactly why things feel hard — just that they do. I help individuals and couples untangle the inner noise, break free from old patterns, and reconnect — with themselves and each other. Whether you're navigating stress, disconnection, conflict, or a sense that life just isn’t working the way it should, therapy can offer real change — and real relief.

Are you feeling Overwhelmed? Anxious? Low mood? Stressed? Feeling like this can be debilitating and can lead to a feeling of stuckness. It can affect your behaviours, your sleep and your overall health and well-being. This can often lead to being stuck in the same patterns of behaviour and this can feel exhausting. You may have experienced trauma which has left you feeling dysregulated and unsafe. You may be feeling hyper-vigilant and tense, or the opposite, and feeling very low and numb to life. You may be unable to function and live life in the way you want to. This can be really distressing and can make you feel alone.

I work with both individuals and couples. As an individual, some sudden event may have thrown you into crisis and challenged your ability to cope. This might include, a difficulty in a relationship; a loss/bereavement of some kind; or a change that has resulted in stress/anxiety and a feeling of being destabilised. Alternatively you may be suffering from a more general, on-going struggle to see any direction or purpose. A feeling of being disconnected from yourself and others and of there being very little enjoyment in your life.

People attend counselling for all sorts of reasons. For some of us it helps to have someone outside of friends and family to share our thoughts with and reflect on the challenges we face. Counselling can also be a refuge when crisis hits and we need help to understand and process our experiences. Whatever it is that brings you here, I welcome you and offer you space to think and to connect. My approach is warm and grounded. I work integratively, meaning that I draw on a range of counselling approaches and work with you to agree aims and a pace that is supportive.

When we feel stuck, experience difficult emotions, or the challenges we are negotiating are distressing, finding a space to work through and move beyond such difficulties can feel overwhelming in itself. Through working together with you, I aim to create a space where you can explore, make sense of and manage distress, address challenges, build psychological resilience and mental well-being, while supporting you to develop skills and strategies for long-term mental health benefits.

We live in a culture that promotes the idea of strong, powerful individuals who live picture perfect lives. There is little room for showing our vulnerability, or our need for connection. There is a cultural expectation that when things are difficult for us we should just 'get over it' and not make a fuss, this might manifest in you with thoughts of "what's wrong with me", "why is this so hard" and "I should be able to manage by myself" and so on! You may be feeling fragmented, disconnected, numb, overwhelmed, fearful, unable to cope, you might feel like giving up.

Hello, I’m Melissa. Many of the people I work with have experienced childhood trauma, sexual abuse or early experiences that have disrupted their lives. Even when these events happened years ago, their impact can still show up as difficulty focusing, difficulty forming and maintaining healthy relationships, an inability to feel settled or safe, low mood, difficulties trusting yourself or others. Therapy can be a space to gently explore these experiences and begin to feel more in control again. Together we can work on understanding how the past may be affecting the present, developing ways to move forward.

Counselling can be life changing because having space to talk about how you feel is never a waste of time - but feeling anxious, depressed or unhappy is! Maybe you want to talk to someone but feel unable to share with family or friends? Perhaps you are neurodiverse or suspect you might be and would like to know how to manage your symptoms? Or maybe you just want to make sense of the feelings you are experiencing. You talk, I listen and together we find a new way of being.

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, postcode, or a provider’s name into the search bar. Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
