Currently I have availability for group, not for 1-2-1. Hi, my name’s Ed, I’m a Therapist working in Twickenham, West London, and online nationally. I work with people experiencing a wide range of difficulties from many different backgrounds, everyone’s story and reason for coming to therapy are different but all are equal. I offer both long and short term individual therapy, generally the length of therapy is something that we would discuss in our first session. In the case of longer term therapy we would frequently review as the therapy progresses to consider what work remains and when might it be appropriate to conclude therapy.

You are not broken. You may be experiencing emotional injury, and/or psychological distress, but this does not communicate brokenness. On the contrary, this communicates an emotional BUILD. You might be struggling with symptoms of anxiety, depression, women's issues, trauma, grief, loss, low self-esteem, low self-worth, etc. It may even be likely that you have learned how to live in a way that attempts to guard you from any additional emotional injuries. Essentially, your life experiential may have taught you how to build a wall of emotional defense, but that is not your truest self

I provide an integrative counselling experience. This means I utilise aspects of several models of therapy to suit individual circumstances. It is unrealistic to expect one model of therapy to work for everyone therefore, having access to several models provides an approach that may be tailored to each individual's needs. Therapy should be a collaborative experience where we work together to find the right solutions. In doing so, I hope to find long-term answers for those tired of the 'revolving door' experience of counselling with symptoms being temporarily relieved but continually recurring.

Hi I'm Matthew, a qualified CBT, integrative and psychodynamic psychotherapist. My style is warm and free of judgement. You may have problems you cannot explain to a friend or family member and need a third perspective. I work with anxiety and depression, relationships, loss, abuse, betrayal, self-esteem, anger, or those who are stuck. Improvement comes from insight, understanding and acceptance but also from stepwise, practical change. If requested I can work in a more active and future focused way with the current advice, exercises and activities supported by the evidence base.

Mental health difficulties come in many forms and can impact our lives profoundly. Struggles may have been with us for years, even forming part of our identity, or they may have appeared as if from nowhere. Our attempts to cope often draw from the same well that feeds the problem, making it difficult to change things alone. One of the many ways therapy works is by unlocking different thinking, awareness and experience, allowing problems to be truly addressed in a new, meaningful way.

If you're reading this profile, you may be ready for a shift in your life. I work with individuals and couples. I specialise in Trauma, PTSD, C-PTSD, Coping Skills, Self-Esteem & More. Together, we can create a calm, safe and relaxing environment to self discover without judgement. This is what helps bring clarity and awareness to my clients. Many people feel 'broken' when they have experienced and lived with trauma. I work with people to help those fractured parts, heal. I provide a space for those parts to be heard, and to move towards a sense of wholeness in time. I help clients to find themselves, sometimes for the first time.

Welcome. You've taken the first step. I believe the genuinely supportive presence of another is invaluable; particularly one who is removed from our everyday life, and thus can listen with a completely open attitude. It feels particularly good to be received in this way; our guard can finally drop and in so doing we learn new things about ourselves. There's no deeper way to self-understanding than this. We change to the degree to which we can, unflinchingly, look at ourselves in this way. My aim is to facilitate this process by helping to provide such a space.

Sometimes life is confusing, painful and problematic and we are troubled, distressed and not at peace with our lives or, ourselves. I fully believe that therapy is a setting in which we are able to speak freely and not feel judged; a place where we are met with empathy and understanding. I truly believe a setting such as this provides the basis from which healing can begin. It is absolutely my belief that the answers to our questions lie within us and we just need some assistance in navigating to those answers. Whatever it is you are seeking help with, I would love to work with you to find your answers, clarity and peace.

It takes courage to admit that you need help with a personal problem. You may be consumed with thoughts that paralyse your ability to engage in everyday life. You may awake every morning with feelings of anxiety, fear, shame, or guilt, or even frustration with being unable to change the cycle of overthinking. Perhaps you have retreated, feel isolated or stuck because you are unable to share your problems with others, nor the energy to prioritise quiet time for self-reflection. I am here to offer you a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space to explore your needs.

I am a Chartered Counselling Psychologist. I work with various ages of individuals, from young children to adults. People come to see me with a variety of problems, for example, anxiety, self-harm, loneliness, intrusive thoughts, or overwhelming sadness. People usually seek help when they feel completely stuck and have nowhere else to turn. From there, we work together to figure out how to create the changes they would like. My client's goals are primarily around wanting to change their lives for the better, to have healthier coping skills, to engage more easily with others, to feel less lonely or just a space to be heard.

I understand that seeking therapy can be both comforting and daunting, but it can also be liberating and I commend individuals who reach out for help. Our pain can often be a message that there is something amiss in our lives, and I believe it is important that we listen to that message. Whether you are dealing with a difficult time in your life and need help managing the emotions and thoughts, I aim to assist individuals to better understand the relationship between their feelings and thoughts and explore ways to change maladaptive patterns.

What is the most successful approach to treating borderline personality disorder?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is considered the gold standard of treatment for borderline personality disorder. An evidence-based treatment, it addresses the extreme emotional reactivity, the relationship difficulties, and the acts of self-harm that create so much distress for BPD patients. DBT is a comprehensive program that includes both regular individual psychotherapy sessions and weekly group sessions of skills training.

What happens in treatment of borderline personality disorder?

Treatment typically consists of weekly individual therapy sessions that last an hour and group skill-focused instructional sessions that may last up to two hours. Patients are typically given homework “assignments” in which they are asked to practice in their daily life the skills they acquire in therapy. Patients also keep a diary tracking their emotions and impulses as a way to know which situations are most problematic and to help them gain control over their own behavior. Difficult situations and feelings are typically reviewed in therapy sessions and more constructive solutions found.

What kinds of problems does BPD treatment help with?

DBT was initially developed to dampen the self-destructive impulses of chronically suicidal patients. It is now the treatment of choice for borderline personality disorder, a serious condition marked by extreme emotional reactivity, relationship instability, and self-injurious behaviors. Treatment of BPD helps patients tolerate the flux of emotions without acting on them, often with a specific focus on tolerating negative emotions. DBT addresses the core problems of BPD—fear of abandonment, low self-esteem, and impulsivity.

What is the goal of treatment in borderline personality disorder?

The goal of treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD) is to relieve the extreme emotional distress that patients experience—to curb their emotional reactivity, to minimize their inclination to self-harm, and to reduce their impulsivity. Toward these ends, patients are not only taught an array of new coping skills and techniques for emotional regulation, they are given opportunities to practice them. Another major goal of treatment is interpersonal effectiveness; patients learn and problem-solve ways to effectively communicate in relationships, especially how to ask for what they need as a way to minimize hurt feelings.
