To begin counselling can be a life-changing decision. You may want to address thoughts and feelings or specific challenges that can be hard to speak to others about, or perhaps made a decision to address the impact of past trauma, loss or shame. By sharing your story and emotional journey within the therapeutic space, it can be heard in a new way, as though for the first time. In this way, different narratives can be explored, allowing you to take greater ownership of your life and your future.

I am a warm, caring, understanding and empathic person who is hugely passionate about psychotherapy, about people and about helping others come into a place of freedom. I totally believe in the transforming power of the therapeutic relationship. I have seen it transform my own life and the lives of countless others that I have counselled. I am now in the privileged position of using this passion to help enable and empower others to turn their own lives around as well.

Hello and a warm welcome. Sometimes it can be hard to find the right counsellor, especially if you are feeling lost, anxious, low or completely overwhelmed by life. The process of finding someone who you feel comfortable with can be confusing and perhaps a little daunting and yet it is so important to find the right person for you. I hope this goes some way to helping you making that decision. Something may have happened in your life such as a loss, a traumatic event, a relationship breakdown, or you may just feel you have ‘lost’ yourself along the way. Perhaps you feel lonely, confused, trapped or in complete despair?

I am a BACP qualified integrative counsellor with experience of working with a range of issues. Working in an integrative way means that I use a number of approaches, or schools of thought when working with clients, as no two people are the same. Above all else I see you as an individual with individual needs. We can explore what you can change and what you need, to feel happier and more at home in yourself, your relationships and your day to day life. We might look at your patterns; how you think and feel about yourself and others, the things that you don't understand about yourself and your relationships.

Do you ever think that your life could be so much happier or more satisfying than it is? Counselling could be the first step towards making it so. Many of us grow up with negative influences around us: indifference, criticism, insecurity, rejection, sometimes even hostility and aggression. As we grow up we find ourselves absorbing these energies, and in adult life they show up as low self-esteem, as anxiety, as outbursts of rage or as depression. They interfere with our work, with our relationships and with our ability to enjoy and make the most of our lives.

Sometimes life can feel a huge strain and our normal ways of coping can feel inadequate. Old issues and feelings can surface and feel like they are taking over. When this happens it may be time to root out the problem so the present situation becomes more bearable. EMDR can help do that. In an initial session we can discuss your problems and find out what will be most helpful for you. Past overwhelming experiences in your life ( e.g. bereavement, sexual assault, bullying, medical or health experiences, childhood abuse or neglect, transport accidents) may be intruding in a way that feels unmanageable. If so, EMDR can help.

From time to time everyone experiences stress, sadness, anger, relational conflict and grief which we often suffer alone. Accepting help from others can be difficult but maybe you feel you’ve toughing it out on your own for too long. Whether you are struggling with an identifiable trauma or you’ve reached a point where recurring feelings are becoming unmanageable; a course of psychotherapeutic counselling may help you make sense of what is happening and enable you to gain and maintain some stability. Feelings of fear, anger, rejection and lack of confidence are difficult areas and discussing them with friends too raw and personal.

There are many reasons you may be seeking counselling but I imagine you are wanting something to change. My aim is to facilitate a relationship that is tailored to you and created with you. This provides the conditions for you to freely and safely explore the challenges you may face as well as the trauma or difficulties you have experienced. Counselling is not only about what we think of ourselves and our life but more importantly, our felt sense of ourselves and our visceral experience of life. Giving space and awareness to our experience is what informs us of what is needed for healing, growth and change.

I am a UKCP-registered integrative existential psychotherapist with extensive experience in delivering long and short term psychotherapy to individuals. As an existential psychotherapist, I am particularly interested in how we make meaning of the world and of our lives, and how this affects our day to day functioning. Experiencing a crisis of meaning can be a major source of stress and anxiety. If your life starts to feel meaningless to you, you may end up in a hopeless and depressed state. The therapist’s role is to navigate the difficult feelings that can arise in the process and help you find renewed purpose in your life.

We will all encounter challenges during our lives. It may be difficult to ask for help but in reaching out we show strength - it takes courage to be vulnerable, open up and acknowledge we need support. I specialise in working with low self esteem, transforming deep-rooted issues, anxiety, depression and feelings of being stuck - whether it be in your relationship, in your job, or life in general. I have been working on an individual basis with clients both short and long term since 2015. Counselling can allow you to gain inner clarity and strength, as well as help you to live a more meaningful life.

Having experienced at first hand the hugely positive impact counselling has had on my own life, I chose to train as a psychodynamic therapist to help others experience the same profound benefits. I now use an integrative approach, which has enriched my work with clients. Working with you, we will together examine and uncover often unconscious or repressed memories which in turn can drive unhelpful patterns of behaviour. We will explore the sources of your problems and aim to deal with the underlying issues, not just try to find a way to cope with them. Only by making peace with the past can you look forward to a happy future.

Most people enter therapy with the entirely understandable aim of addressing and easing current symptoms of distress (depression, anxiety, difficulties sustaining intimate relationships etc) and receiving reassurance and comfort when life seems hard to bear. But I believe that we also need to explore deeper; that it is only by getting underneath these symptoms and trying to understand them and where they come from that real and lasting change can take place. I see the relationship between client and therapist as central and the process as a collaborative journey undertaken by us both.

How can I find a therapist in BN7?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counsellors are all licensed mental health professionals. In many countries, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counsellor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counsellors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counsellor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counselling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
