Being an integrative counsellor means I draw upon person-centred/humanistic, psychodynamic, as well as cognitive behavioural therapies effective when working through, for example, anxiety, stress, & panic attacks, low mood & depression, low self-esteem & self-confidence, difficult relationships, loss, bereavement, & grief, and challenging life stages.
You've recognised your need for help and are now seeking a counsellor who can provide you with the understanding, guidance, and techniques to enable you to make effective changes in your life. Whether it's short-term sessions or for longer, whether in-person, online, or on the phone, our goal will be to enable you to understand and manage your immediate emotional disquiet, and to provide you with the means to empower change.

I specialise in anxiety, depression, perfectionism, bereavement and loss.
Taking the first step to see a counsellor can seem daunting, particularly if you've never done it before. I will support you to explore your feelings and experiences without judgement but with kindness and understanding. Maybe you feel more anxious than usual or there is a specific problem that's troubling you? When we have the opportunity to share how we feel in a safe, confidential environment, it can help us gain a better understanding of ourselves and our relationships, as well as helping us develop our true potential to lead a more fulfilling life.

I work with loss, eg.
Therapy is personal journey, unique to you and directed by what you want to achieve; I trained in Relational Transactional Analysis and use this modality to support my clients' growth in self awareness and understanding of the unconscious patterns that have been driving their behaviour. Many clients can't fully articulate what they want from therapy, only that they want things to be different, this is normal, and part of the process of therapy is working with you to discover what you want. On the way we aim to discover what blocks you from achieving your goals and support you in finding new paths to reach your goal.

We all face different struggles in our lives. You may be feeling low, anxious, angry or lonely and you don’t know why. You may be struggling with a difficult relationship at home or at work. Perhaps your struggle is a response to a change, difficult event or a loss in your life. Your struggle may be something you’ve been engaged in for as long as you can remember. I believe that when we can take the time to explore our experiences and feelings, with someone who can listen with genuine care and curiosity, we can emerge from our struggle to feel better ‘met’ in the world, to be able to engage in our lives more wholeheartedly.

We are a small group of therapists led by Tim Potter. Working from therapy rooms in Tunbridge Wells and Harley Street. For over 25 years we have worked to help people with anxiety, addiction, depression, and other areas of specialism such as post-natal depression, bereavement, and OCD. We receive most of our referrals through word of mouth for adults, children and teenagers. You can expect us to look for a therapist who best suits your needs, and if for some reason we cannot, we can recommend trusted others that are not a part of the practice.

Life events can trigger emotions that are difficult to understand or express. Sudden trauma, redundancy, a business failure, a relationship breakdown, bereavement, abuse, bullying and harassment, or struggles with gender and sexual identity. The list is endless and is as individual as us. These can prevent clear thinking and create worries or reactions, which can go on to cause anxiety, shame, confusion, or possible feelings of guilt that are hard to recognise or cope with. They may also cause a reaction of self-destruction, self-harm, eating disorders, drinking, drug use and other issues.

Have you recently been bereaved and struggling to know how to cope. Are you usually seen as the ‘strong one’- the person others turn to for help and support? Does your appearance convey confidence and self-assurance, but inside you find yourself struggling and overwhelmed? You may have lost a loved one during the pandemic and you are finding it difficult ‘holding it altogether’? Is this sense of unease affecting your eating or sleeping patterns, are you irritable with those close to you, or feel anxious about any further changes?

My approach helps you to recognise when feelings are out of balance with experiences and make changes accordingly. My work aims to help you find a way that you can understand and use to navigate life's challenges through working relationally to better understand your own potential. Prior to qualifying as a counsellor I worked in executive and leadership positions helping me to understand the struggles and stress associated with a demanding and insecure workplace.

I have worked with all kinds of people, for all different reasons. I have found that’s its very rare for people just to want to talk about one particular issue. I will offer you the opportunity for you to be heard, a chance for you to gain a different perspective and a deeper understanding of who you are and the choices you have. I provide a non-judgemental space for you to explore your own thoughts and feelings about the difficulties you may be having.

Hello and thank you for visiting my profile. I am a psychotherapeutic counsellor, with a diploma in Integrative Transpersonal Counselling, and a Registered Member of the BACP. I work in a very relational way with clients from all back grounds and with any issue they might need to bring. It's important to me that I can provide a safe space to be able to explore the past, present and future hopes, as well as what might be held unconsciously, through the mediums of dreams and imagery, bodily sensations and reflections. The aim is always to give the client the tools and understanding in order to live the life they want to the full.

Website: rhodascantleburycounselling.co.uk Counselling gives you your own time and space to consider what is going on, who you are and who you want to be. The possibility of time and space might feel important because you're currently experiencing something where your own resources no longer feel sufficient to cope. Perhaps you see that you're responding to situations with more anxiety, anger or distress than feels entirely manageable, or it may be that you're feeling very little and have a sense of being out of touch with yourself or others.

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
