I specialise in anxiety, bereavement, relationship issues, replacement child syndrome and trauma, offering patience and understanding to explore challenges or unhealthy patterns from emotional wounds.
Are you looking for the 'right' counsellor? Hi, my name is Lizette and I believe we each have an innate ability to know what is right for our personal situation. But sometimes, due to either loss, trauma, bereavement, abuse, adverse events from our childhood or a life changing event, we lose our direction. Given the right environment, including a safe space to be heard, I can give you time to explore your needs for healing, change and growth. You’ve already made the first step, the next step begins with you trusting your instinct and making the connection that feels right to you.

I specialise in anxiety, depression, perfectionism, bereavement and loss.
Taking the first step to see a counsellor can seem daunting, particularly if you've never done it before. I will support you to explore your feelings and experiences without judgement but with kindness and understanding. Maybe you feel more anxious than usual or there is a specific problem that's troubling you? When we have the opportunity to share how we feel in a safe, confidential environment, it can help us gain a better understanding of ourselves and our relationships, as well as helping us develop our true potential to lead a more fulfilling life.

I support adults affected by low self esteem, anxiety, depression, or relationship issues, often those who have experienced the death of a loved one, childhood sexual abuse, or other trauma in life.
Do you put on a brave face but feel different on the inside? Perhaps you’re empty and numb, or overwhelmed by emotions? Are you finding it hard to cope day-to-day? I know how tough life can be at times and how lonely it feels when no one seems to understand. If you’re wondering when you’ll feel happy or hopeful again, or you’re worrying about the future and fearing the worst, or maybe you’re struggling with a big change and a sense of who you are; I’d like to help. Being able to talk freely to someone, without fear of judgement or shame, can be a huge relief.

Most people feel overwhelmed by issues at certain times in their lives. You may feel overwhelmed by grief following a bereavement, or by anxiety following a difficult life event, or you may be suffering as a result of abuse in a relationship. You may want to express your feelings in relation to these issues and require a safe space to do so. You may want to explore them more deeply so you can acknowledge them and understand them better. And ultimately you may want to develop in a way which helps you overcome those issues. Being able to integrate those more uncomfortable parts of ourselves can lead to a better and more fruitful life.

We can all feel overwhelmed at times: it might be the breakdown of a relationship, loss of a friendship, daily struggles or those horrible feelings of anxiety that just won’t go away. We might be feeling unhappy but we’re not sure why, we might feel life isn’t going the way we want it to whilst everyone else seems to be doing ok. Talking openly and feeling truly heard can be life changing: we can say all those things that keep going round in our heads, the issues that keep coming back time and again, and work towards understanding what’s going on, make changes and find some peace. Isn't that what we all want and deserve?

I work primarily with adults experiencing anxiety, depression and bereavement (I have particular experience in bereavement by suicide).
It was Mr Miyagi in the movie “The Karate Kid” who said, “You know, but you do not understand.” We are often aware of the feelings and thoughts we are having, the behaviours they are causing and the distress that can generate. We can even know the traumas that have happened that we can attribute them to. But we can’t understand or articulate them enough to change them and heal. Perhaps this is the way you feel? Maybe you have been struggling with anxiety, depression or both for some time and everyday life is more challenging than you want it to be? Maybe you’ve experienced a traumatic event that you can’t seem to get over?

From a starting point in bereavement counselling I now work with adults and couples who want to explore the impact of many stresses, strains and challenges of life.
Counselling can seem a challenge if you have never sought this kind of help before, but my aim at the outset is to provide the beginnings of a therapeutic relationship which can open the door to an exploration of experience of the past, as well as the present. The aim of therapy can be specific, or obscure, but together we will work towards an achievable goal. I work intuitively, but with firm boundaries which keep us both safe within a very special relationship. Therapy can be long term, or short term, but it is the client who decides what number of sessions is going to be most beneficial.

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
