I work with people experiencing a range of difficulties relating to feeling unable to be fully themselves with others. This might include problems like depression, anxiety, loneliness, low self-esteem, or imposter syndrome. Sometimes the people I work with feel unsure of who they are and are looking for a safe space to explore this. They may be experiencing difficulties at work or in their personal relationships. Other people I work with might feel stuck in life or want to explore transitions between different life stages. I work with clients looking for a gentle, curious approach to therapy.

There are times in our lives when we notice that we don’t feel ok and that we need to move from that place, but don’t know how. In these times, counselling can offer a safe, private and confidential space to notice and share anything which doesn’t feel ok. It offers room to take care of, and notice ourselves. Only you can know best. I feel that through the relationship of counsellor and client we can work to notice or re-notice yourself. We might also find new ways of learning to cope with the pressures of life, or re-find old ways of supporting yourself that you have forgotten. (We can work creatively if you enjoy that).

Traumatic life events can create sudden, urgent need for support. Equally, therapy can be a positive, planned act of self care, facing old wounds or barriers to growth and happiness. 17 years practice with young people, adults, couples and families has taught me that everyone has unique experiences and needs. Therefore my approach is integrative, tailored to each client and draws on 7 years training which includes psychodynamic psychotherapy, solution focused therapy, CBT, DBT, trauma focused and humanistic counselling. I am committed to providing a positive, rewarding and life enhancing experience for both clients and supervisees.

At times we can find ourselves stuck in our own emotions, with thoughts that go around and around, and in patterns that we know are unhelpful. We might have been told that we’re ‘too sensitive’ and learned how to keep parts of us to ourselves. Similarly, specialising in working with women impacted by sexual violence, I understand the difficulty in allowing some parts to the surface. What feels familiar can also be exhausting, but change is uncomfortable and often scary. We need the support of someone who can help us untangle the stories of our lives and move forward with compassion and vitality.

I aim to offer a service which is as unique as you are! We all experience life in different ways and I do not believe that there is a one fits all solution that works for everyone. My belief is that we are the only experts on ourselves and that we do have all the resources we need to be happy and fulfilled in our lives, for some of us we just don’t know it yet or maybe we have just lost the confidence to believe in ourselves. I welcome you to explore and challenge your beliefs and values to help you find the best way in life for you, the one that fits and allows you to work towards that wonderful goal of being you again

Life isn't a straight forward, easy process, it has its roller coaster of ups, downs and roundabouts, how do we maintain our focus on our everyday lives, we attempt to get on with it, but sometimes it can feel like an uphill struggle. We become overloaded, overwhelmed, stressed and irritable and sometimes our friends, family and colleagues notice our behaviour before we do. When we do realise that we need support, help, courage, whatever you chose to call it then we are half way there, the rest is looking for someone to share our difficulties and pressures with. I have over 15 years experience working for different settings.

I offer a space where you can explore past patterns in order to bring increased awareness and understanding to the present, opening up possibilities for change and personal growth. We often reach a point in our lives where our old ways of coping aren't working anymore, or our old patterns are getting in the way of us being our full selves. This can be experienced as a crisis point, when things come to a head, which can feel difficult and challenging but is a great time to come to therapy and explore what's happening so we can move forward with our lives.

I'm Tessa a Certified Play Therapy UK (PTUK) Play Therapist and also a trainee Creative Arts Counsellor for Adolescents and Young People. I love my job and feel privileged to be able to work with children, young people and their families/carers in this way. In 2020 I was diagnosed with adult ADHD and I feel my neurodiverse brain plus my experience of growing up knowing I was different helps me to understand certain situations and responses. This plus the fact I had 3 children within 2 years and 9 months helps me to offer a level of understanding and empathy whilst being non-judgmental.

Available weekday evening's between 6pm and 11pm. Each person's journey through life is a unique experience, and when times are difficult it can often feel overwhelming and lonely, like no one understands. Things before that were easy to do are now becoming increasingly tough, or at times even impossible. There are many reasons that lead people to seek out therapy, you have already overcome the first hurdle to recovery, and that is seeking some support.

Hello. The decision to start therapy shows courage to face into and tackle issues and choices in life. This might be addressing a specific problem or challenge, or it may be about trying to make sense of things that have happened to you, or patterns that have become stuck. I am trained as a psychologist, psychotherapist and coach so we can work in the way that suits you best. I work with adults and adolescents (16+) using creative and evidence based approaches to support new ways of being. This includes people suffering with anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), low self-esteem but also more general challenges.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
