My work with adults covers areas such as addiction, bereavement, meaning in midlife, self-esteem and self-loathing, low mood, anxiety, health-based trauma and relationship breakdown.
Understanding ourselves, the decisions and choices we make and our relationships with others can sometimes be baffling. You may find yourself acting or behaving in ways that you struggle to align with your personal principles, wishes or desires. At times, your experience may suggest that your way of being doesn't blend with the world around you and you might find yourself meeting resistance from people or institutions. Therapy gives us the chance to explore these challenges together. We can look at your relationships with others and the meaning you make of them, helping to develop your insight, self-awareness and self-acceptance.

Hello, I am Rebecca, and I am an Art Psychotherapist and also an EMDR trainee. Together we can build a therapy to suit your needs and begin where you most feel comfortable. Art therapy provides another tool to express ourselves when words are too difficult. Using art materials whilst we speak can feel non-intrusive and help you talk about how you are feeling. EMDR can help in processing distressing experiences, loss and traumatic memories. I provide individual therapy for adults, young people and children.

I work short, medium and long-term with clients of all ages with many differing needs, but have a special interest in working with adolescents and young adults and also with bereavement.
Life can present us with many challenges. The build-up of everyday stresses and disappointments, or the ability to cope with sadness and pain may at times affect your self-esteem and confidence levels. You may feel the need for support in addition to what you already have in place, which is when you may decide to seek the help of a counsellor. I run my private practice on Tuesdays between 10am-7pm offering remote sessions either by Zoom or telephone - please visit my website for more info. Contact me to arrange a free 30 minute introductory session to help you decide whether I am the right person to work with you.

Welcome to Start Something Counselling and Psychotherapy. I understand that life can be challenging. Sometimes specific events and experiences create pain and emotional discomfort. Some students are currently trying to study while experiencing depression or anxiety, or recovering from trauma or an eating disorder, while others are coping with challenges like family breakdown, bereavement or physical health problems.
I support students aged 16+, as well as adults affected by their time at school, including ex boarders. Being a student can be a hugely stressful experience. What should be an exciting and stimulating time can turn into a nightmare with low mood and self esteem; fear and anxiety. Sometimes, the impact is more subtle, and surviving difficult school experiences can force us to adapt in ways that can become unhelpful later in life. Our time at school can go on to influence us for many years to come. I have supported many adults affected by their school experiences, and struggling with the impact on their current lives.

And with children who have experienced abuse, bereavement, domestic violence and parental separation.
I am a HCPC ( Health and Care Professions Council) and BAAT (British Association of Art Therapists) registered Art Psychotherapist who specialises in working with children and young people. I provide a safe, confidential space for children to explore their inner world through art making and creativity. Children often struggle to express themselves through words. Art can act as a medium through which a child communicates their thoughts and feelings in a more natural, less direct way. These feelings and experiences can then be thought about and processed safely.

I have experience of working with people suffering from trauma, anxiety, depression, stress, addictions, bereavement, relationship difficulties and negative body image as well as major life changes such as divorce or illness.
It takes courage to start therapy. Often, we are at our most vulnerable at these times. I believe the most important thing to establish first is trust. I am not here to tell you what’s ‘wrong with you’ or what you ‘have done wrong’ in the past. My aim is to meet you where you are and invite you on a journey for us to explore together, in collaboration, what is upsetting you and holding you back.

If you've arrived here, you are already thinking about counselling. You might feel depressed, anxious or overwhelmed and finding it difficult to cope with the challenges of life. Perhaps you have experienced a recent loss, had a sudden change of circumstances or are struggling with relationships. Maybe you don't even know what's troubling you. Research shows positive change happens when there is a good match between client and counsellor. It’s difficult to choose a counsellor or know what to expect from counselling without having a face-to-face meeting. This is why I offer a reduced rate intro session of £15 where we can meet

To begin counselling can be a life-changing decision. You may want to address thoughts and feelings or specific challenges that can be hard to speak to others about, or perhaps made a decision to address the impact of past trauma, loss or shame. By sharing your story and emotional journey within the therapeutic space, it can be heard in a new way, as though for the first time. In this way, different narratives can be explored, allowing you to take greater ownership of your life and your future.

As well as this I have worked alongside clients who were experiencing anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts/feelings, grief and other themes.
I am a qualified counsellor and psychotherapist working in a person-centred way. This means that no session is approached with a set agenda. The session shall be guided by what you would like to discuss. My role is to metaphorically walk alongside you as a gentle guide. I aim to provide an empathic, sincere and warm space for you to explore your emotions, find your voice and develop an understanding of what may be going on for you. I am based in Stoke-on-Trent for anybody wanting in-person sessions; however, I also offer online sessions.

Bereavement Counsellors

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
