Talking therapy helped me coming to terms with my own complex grief, which inspired me to become a counsellor.
Whether you are overwhelmed or in distress by events in your life, have a niggle that life could be more satisfying, or you are seeking balance and a sense of peace, counselling may help. I can provide a safe atmosphere where we can explore what is going on for you. I will not give you advice or opinions. I may let you know where to find reliable information, however, my main aim is to be there for you, using my skills and experience, to enable you to find new perspectives and your own solutions.

Many of my clients are looking for help, individually or as a couple, to cope with a loss or with difficult or changing relationships.
Perhaps you are reading this profile because you are going through something difficult right now, and you are looking for someone to offer you support without agenda or judgement? Therapy is about creating a compassionate space in which you will be heard and given the time to explore what is going on for you. My role is to help you feel safe and empowered to reflect on your feelings, fears, hopes and frustrations, and to find a way forward that is right for you. So that you can decide if I am the right therapist for you, I am always happy to have a conversation via Zoom before you book an appointment.

Therapy can be for those looking to learn more about themselves or to work through a difficult memory, and not necessarily only for those in crisis. Sitting down with someone for a personal conversation rarely comes with no strings attached. That’s what I can offer; a safe space to speak your mind, without the fear of judgement that naturally comes from people who have a personal stake in your life.

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
