Before I tell a little about myself, allow me to say, well done for getting this far! I appreciate that many people become a little anxious at the prospect of an intense atmosphere in a counselling room. Thats not how I work though. My first aim is to help you relax. To see that yes, it is a 'safe and confidential environment for you to talk about anything that you want'. But there's no need for it to be a heavy and intense atmosphere either. I believe we can be practical, pragmatic and make some real changes without sacrificing empathy or compassion.

Life can be incredibly painful and confusing. There can be times we don’t know what to do or where to turn. Counselling and psychotherapy can offer a safe space to try and work things out and find a better, more fulfilling way of life. It can sometimes helpful to look at the past, to help us better understand And heal the present. I have over 20 years experience. I also work for BACP - British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy in the Professional Standards team.

Through open and honest dialogue I work with you to explore your inner world and uncover the root of your struggles, ultimately helping you to find new ways of being and relating to yourself and others. My approach is to create a safe and supportive space for you to explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences. Therapy is a process where we work together to uncover the underlying patterns and beliefs that may be holding you back. By fostering self-awareness and promoting self-acceptance I help you develop a deeper understanding of yourself and your relationships.

Hi, I'm Julie, and I am passionate about working with people who have experienced abuse or trauma, whether it be sexual, physical or emotional. When we experience trauma we lose part of who we truly are because of the after effects, such as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, flashbacks and dissociation (when we feel distanced from our emotions or ‘spaced out’, as if we’re living on autopilot). I love helping people rediscover who they really are by creating an environment in which they feel safe and completely accepted. I don't analyse you but with careful listening will know what we need to work on.

Every so often life throws things at us that we struggle to deal with or understand. This can be anything from the loss of a loved one to break down in relationship with family members to receiving a life changing diagnosis. It can be because of these things that we begin to question things in our everyday life and who we are. Having suffered a grief which ultimately changed the course of my life, experienced breakdowns in relationships, supported my own child through an ADHD diagnosis and not understanding how my past had affected me I understand how it feels to go through these struggles.

Our counselling offers help in addressing the difficult areas of your life. This might involve loss and grief, relationship troubles or problems at work. Equally, there are times when the cause is not clear but you still feel something is wrong. Colleagues, family and friends can be a great source of support but it's not always easy to confide in those closest to you. At times like these, talking to someone who is not personally involved can make a difference. A professional counsellor will listen to you without making judgments and can help you find new resources within yourself.

You may feel overwhelmed, unseen, or unsure how to make sense of your identity, past or present. Perhaps you’re LGBTQ+, neurodivergent, or carrying trauma. Maybe early experiences shaped how you see yourself, and you’re ready for that to change. You want someone who understands without judgment. You’re hoping to unmask, understand and share your emotions, heal old wounds, and grow into a steadier sense of who you are and what you want. Most of all, you’re longing for a safe, warm space where you can finally feel understood and supported.

Counselling can help provide the space to talk and reflect on things that may be worrying us, it allows people to discuss their problems and any difficult feelings they encounter in a safe, confidential environment. Being self-aware and having the capability to think and feel emotions with clarity and understanding is part and parcel of being human and counselling can help us feel both more aware and less overwhelmed by aspects of our human life. I truly believe in the power of counselling and am honoured to be able to work with people in difficult and stressful times. I really value "relationship" and "being" in counselling and ho

Hi. Sometimes we can find ourselves in troubling and distressing times, not knowing how to find our way out. It can be much easier and achievable when shared with someone who can support and guide you through it. It can feel very lonely and isolating, often a place you never expected to find yourself in and living through. Finding a way out and some peace can feel like an impossible task. Being able to talk to someone in a non-judgemental environment that gets and understands you can be a massive relief. To know that you have the support of an experienced qualified counsellor is a great support with working through your concerns.

I offer a space for children, young people and their families using a blended approach of art therapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy to come alongside each individual to help them to explore their inner world. With over 15 years of experience working in a number of settings, including schools, charitable organisations and the NHS, I love to meet new people and work together to build a trusting relationship in which thoughts and feelings can be explored and understood. The added dynamic of art and play allows an opportunity for children’s primary mode of communication to enable expression where words sometimes cannot be found.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
