I work with adults, children and adolescents who would like a safe place to explore and make sense of feelings, thoughts or relationships. Sometimes talking with someone helps to work out what you want to do next and see clearer what choices we have. Art and creative materials can often help children and young people express themselves more clearly. Being a parent is rewarding, but hard work, with each unique relationship requiring different responses. Together, we find a way to understand the challenges more clearly, make sense of the emotions and behaviours involved and take decisions on the ways you want to go forward.

I am am an empathic, respectful, fully qualified psychotherapist. I also offer supervision to trainee counsellors and therapists. I am the owner and practice manager of Inner Space Counselling Ltd. in central Tunbridge Wells/Sevenoaks. I view counselling and psychotherapy as a dynamic process, created between the two of us so I offer my clients the opportunity to work collaboratively with me in a safe, non-judgemental environment. Typically, my approach to psychotherapy is to play an active part. I intervene, reflect, share theory if appropriate, and ask questions. I am relaxed, straightforward and non-judgemental.

I'm passionate about helping mothers thrive. Many of the mothers I work with come to me carrying a huge amount of guilt and shame because motherhood so far is not what they had dreamed of. Perhaps they are constantly anxious about doing the 'right' thing, or anxious about their baby's health. Perhaps they are struggling to get through each day without feeling completely overwhelmed by their child's needs. Maybe they cannot find their own way for the sea of other people's opinions. In their heart they know that something is not right, but it has perhaps been hard to find the space and time to find a way forward.

People come for counselling for all sorts of reasons, you may be feeling overwhelmed, alone, lost, challenged and in emotional pain and you may be experiencing certain symptoms that are negatively impacting your life. I provide you with a safe, non judgemental space where you can be you and where you will be supported and heard, enabling you to explore and clarify the problems that are concerning you and presently move towards growth and change. I tailor my counselling approach to suit you specifically, based on your needs and I work with you closely in order to achieve your goals, walking with you every step of the way.

There are many reasons you might decide to seek counselling, at any stage of your life; each reason is valid and unique to you. There might be issues related to unresolved traumas in the past, or it might be that day-to-day pressures have become challenging and are affecting you. Dealing with relationship issues be it, personally, as a couple or indeed within the Family unit is extremely testing and stressful. What has happened to get you to this situation where communication has suffered, your needs are not being met and you never seem to be understood? This results in a sense of loss in your identity and feelings of self worth. You find yourself often in emotional conflict with constant arguments. You are unable to see how this can change. An independent balanced "voice" with empathy and understanding of issues will help you to navigate to restore a more positive relationship with respect and trust .

I have 17 years experience of working with children, adolescents and adults. I specialise in helping people recover from past adverse/traumatic experiences. I adopt a holistic, supportive and person-centred approach and I believe in the importance of the therapeutic relationship as a mechanism for change. I believe that by creating the right conditions for personal growth that most people can find meaningful solutions to their difficulties. Joanna has a wealth of experience working with adults, young people and children.  She uses  tried and tested methods in her practice, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and for more complex issues, schema therapy. She works with adults, teens and children with mild, moderate or chronic depression, anxiety, OCD, post-traumatic stress disorder, post-natal depression, work stress, health anxiety (hypochondria) , performance anxiety, panic attacks, agoraphobia, phobias, social anxiety and shyness, low self-esteem and confidence issues and personality-level issues.

I am an experienced therapist and passionate about what I do. I work with individuals who are experiencing personal difficulties and suffering in their lives to help gain a better understanding of those issues. Having experienced counselling myself, I can appreciate how intimidating it can be to speak about your problems. I offer a safe, friendly, supportive and confidential space where you have time to share your difficulties and concerns. My integrative training draws on different theoretical approaches, but I believe at the centre of this is the relationship we have with ourselves, and the world around us.

Couples counselling has been described as ‘like piloting a helicopter in a hurricane,’ hence the necessity for expertise and experience in the skills required. I’m a specialist relationship counsellor with nearly thirty years’ experience of couple work including communication, neglected relationships, intimacy, sex, affairs, separation and sex addiction. Clients compulsively using porn, online chat/sex, multiple affairs or sex workers form part of my case work. I also work with their partners/the couple. I co-facilitate education and support groups for partners of the sexually compulsive or chronically unfaithful (see groups tab).

Sometimes life can be challenging for a variety of reasons and talking things through with a trained professional can be life changing in many different ways. I can offer my experience and training to assist my clients through this process to reach the place they want to be. It is not always easy and requires commitment but the results can be enlightening and sometimes life changing.
