I have been helping clients at the Asian Family Counselling Service since 2018.
Hello and welcome to Chen Counselling. Chen means peace in Urdu. I strive to support my clients in bringing peace to their life, with whatever they bring to counselling. I can understand that reaching out for help can be a very difficult task if you are overwhelmed with life issues. However, help is available in the form of counselling. I collaborate with my clients to help them gain awareness of their issues and relieve the distress they may be in. If needed, I psychoeducate my clients on mental health and well being and the link between unhelpful thinking, emotions and behaviours that may be having a negative impact on them.

My Asian background enables me to provide an insight and understanding of overcoming cultural and religious difficulties.
Sometimes life can be tough and talking about the challenges and struggles we go through with our loved ones can be even more difficult and it can leave us feeling isolated and lonely. Asking for help is not easy and if you have not experienced counselling before you may find your self asking the question, do i need counselling? If you feel the need to gain insight and self awareness than counselling is a safe place for you to start your journey of self healing. We are living in the time of uncertainty and many of us are feeling stressed and anxious. It can be helpful to talk to a professional who can provide an outside perspective.

I also specialise in working with clients from South-Asian and backgrounds where I have worked with clients who have experienced difficulties and issues linked to identity, and meeting cultural pressures and expectations.
I have over fifteen years of experience of working as a counsellor in Mental health and now as a Counselling Psychologist PhD (in training). I offer a calm safe space where together we can find clarity on what has brought you to seek counselling. My authentic, warm and inclusive approach helps to create a non-judgemental environment. At times it can be very confusing and frustrating when we can't make sense of our emotions and often feel stuck or overwhelmed, I work collaboratively with my clients to understand how they construe their inner reality and life experiences, which helps to promote clients’ wellbeing and healing.

I have experience working with clients from the South-Asian Community and also in relation to male mental health.
The relationships and experiences that we have, shape the way that we understand the world around. These can make us feel uneasy, and we need to think out aloud. Having an objective ear can help to better understand ourselves. This can be related to personal relationships, our working life, family challenges, life events and many aspects of the world around us. I offer a space that works ethically, and within the boundaries of confidentiality and safeguarding. I aim to support exploration of how challenges and concerns can be overcome in a collaborative way and at your pace. I offer individual counselling.

As an integrative counsellor, I use a blend of therapeutic approaches to support your wellbeing which, if you are Asian or Muslim, this may include looking at faith, culture and family dynamics.
Hello and welcome! How are you feeling? Not your usual self? Anxious? Low mood? Overwhelmed? Stuck? You may come to therapy with a specific problem or with a more general unease or desire for something to change. Life can sometimes leave you with feelings and emotions that you may not always understand. This can sometimes play out in repeating patterns with people who are close to you, or within your own thoughts and feelings. There's nothing too big or small for us to talk about. Collaboratively, we will explore what you bring, identify unhelpful patterns, heal emotional wounds and trauma, and grow towards your potential.

My Background I worked in the corporate sector for 25 years, running my own recruitment business and deriving great satisfaction from the challenge of this industry. However, over time, I noticed how people can end up feeling trapped, overburdened by mental health issues that they didn’t feel they could communicate to others. I also struggled in my own way, which is what led me to learn as much as possible about personal development – a journey that began in 1993. Since then, I have always wanted to dedicate myself to educating those experiencing the same issues and supporting them manage their well-being more effectively. As

Living with ADHD can feel like constantly navigating a whirlwind of thoughts and impulses, making it challenging to stay organized and focused on tasks. Simple activities may become overwhelming. Distractions can pull our attention in different directions, often leading to frustration and feeling inadequate. Despite these struggles, moments of hyperfocus and creativity can also emerge, which shows the dynamic and complex nature of living with ADHD. Knowing whether you have ADHD is the first step to getting help and support to be able to manage the condition.

I work with people aged 18+ from a variety of backgrounds, cover a number of different issues, offer a range of appointment times - daytime, evening, weekends - and also accommodate different time zones. As a therapist, I aim to be many things - clear, honest, practical and realistic amongst others, but, above all, I want you to know this: it is possible to have a different relationship with your struggles. Being more present in the moment, feeling more fulfilled or energetic, challenging negative thought cycles and changing your relationship with the past are all achievable goals which we can work towards, together.

How we are with ourselves matters. At the core of my counselling work is you. Does trauma, grief or doubt steer you away from where you are or what you are striving towards? I understand sharing these experiences can be overwhelming or uncomfortable. In a confidential and calm space, I will support you through your personal thought patterns and emotions. At your pace, we will understand and reflect on past and present experiences, inviting compassionate inner dialogue and movement away from shame and criticism. I am committed to being respectful and sensitive towards the diversity of experience and beliefs. I will not judge you.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

A culturally sensitive therapist would be respectful and considerate of different groups, with regard to race, sexual orientation, gender, and other factors that are important to an individual. These considerations can help a client feel understood as well as validated. While some people think highlighting race could promote stereotypes and bias, more understanding and knowledge about cultural differences is a positive for a healthy therapeutic alliance.

How can I recognise an effective Asian therapist?

You can discern a lot by asking how familiar the potential therapist is with different cultures, as well as asking how they might address issues related to identity, values, and beliefs. Also inquire about their education, as well as any particular training they may have completed, such as cultural sensitivity or diversity and inclusion programs.

What if the therapist does not have my exact background?

The therapist may not share a client’s exact background, but the therapist may have plenty of hands-on experience as well as the sensitivity needed for therapeutic progress. Their sensitivity to different populations will help the client feel accepted and comfortable in sharing their concerns and difficulties.

How might I inquire about a therapist's experience with Asian clients?

A therapist with an Asian background may have experience within their community, as well as broader cultural sensitivity. Ask the potential therapist whether they've worked with individuals who share your background. If they have not worked with similar clients, they may well know someone who has such experience.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Asian therapists?

The directory of Asian therapists includes professionals who have shared their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profiles, and they may not appear in search results for this reason; also, when the number of therapists identified as Asian is limited, the directory will also show therapists with comprehensive experience working with clients from relevant backgrounds.
