My experience especially lies within trauma, grief & loss, low self-esteem/self-confidence, anxiety, work related stress and other life challenges and transitions.
I am passionately committed to finding out what feels safe for each client, in order to offer a safe, therapeutic space, with empathy, warmth and unconditional positive regard. I work in a holistic way, bringing awareness to mind, body, emotions & soul (aka "true self", “authentic self”). I deeply believe that authentic, human relationships are a powerful tool towards positive change. I believe in the uniqueness of each human being and appreciate that "one size doesn't fit all". This is why my continuous commitment to training over the years has enriched my skills & knowledge and allows me to adjust my approach to client needs.

Is life overwhelming and you need to talk to someone? Maybe you need help to develop coping strategies for your anxiety? Whatever challenges you are are facing, I offer a confidential and supportive space to explore your feelings. Being heard and seen in this space, without judgement can be deeply healing. I won't give advice but I won't sit and say nothing either. Instead, I will ask questions and offer other perspectives, enabling you to consider your troubles in depth, and giving you an opportunity to explore what you can do to move forward. I can also suggest ways to help manage panic attacks, and feelings of anxiety and anger.

My name is Rachel. Share your burdens with me, be accepted and listened to, ease tensions, stress, anxiety and feel less sad. I can help you understand why you feel the way you do and discover solutions that enable you to make positive change. You will find ways to reset and self care, improve your confidence and self-esteem. I am a trained Outdoor Therapist based in Saltash at Churchtown Farm Nature Reserve and the Rame Peninsula at Mount Edgcumbe Country Park. Being in the open air is more freeing than sitting indoors. Moving the body enables us to release tensions and it will stimulate new thoughts that encourage change.

Hi, I'm Suzy. Are you looking for an empathic, experienced therapist? I can't wave a magic wand but I can support you in reaching the goal of living your best life. The therapeutic relationship is a place where two human beings can connect on a deeper level to what we may experience in some aspects of day-to-day life, and to really begin to unpick the challenges that you may be experiencing. The chance to sit with another person, to talk, be free from judgments, in a safe and non-threatening environment can be truly life changing. It is an opportunity to feel seen, heard and understood, without the other person having an agenda for how they would like you to be. As well as my work online I am able to see clients face to face at Horizons Counselling service in Plymouth.

Life is like surfing. You can't always predict the conditions, but psychotherapy can help you choose which waves to paddle for, which to ignore and how to shape a board that suits the way you surf best. My practice is based in contemporary psychoanalytic psychotherapy and explores unconscious ways of thinking and acting that may be impacting on your ability to live well today - whatever that means for you. Rather than one psychoanalytic school, I can choose from a range of theory and approaches depending on what suits your needs and how you prefer to work.

Hi. My name is Dan. Most of us seem to spend lots of our time thinking (or maybe worrying?) about our past, or envisioning our future. The difficult truth however is that in actuality the only genuine experience of life we can have is here, now, in the present moment. When we talk about our thoughts and feelings, our relationship to them changes. It's not magic. My role is simply to listen to you with compassion, without judgement, and perhaps help you to hear yourself differently, in the “safe space” of a confidential and (when it works) unique relationship. You are and can only ever possibly be the greatest expert on you.

I work with Anxiety, Relationship issues, Self-harm and Depression.
Good therapy is about change: changing reactions, behaviours, a difficult aspect of self, challenging attitudes/beliefs about yourself or your story. I love working with clients who are prepared to jump in, take risks and seek solutions - this is the way to ensure real change. I will jump in and risk too. I value being human and involved in the therapy and am also practically minded and view the best wisdom as something that can directly be applied to life. A supervisee recently described me as "real, relational, ordinary, practical and not floaty/wispy". I like to incorporate psychoeducation and relevant theoretical information.

Anxiety Counsellors

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
