Hi, my name is Rosie Heartland. I am a recently qualified Transpersonal Arts Therapist and counsellor. In this post pandemic world, many people are suffering from anxiety, depression and the trauma brought on by not only the insecurities of these times, but also by adverse childhood experiences. Taking that leap to enter into therapy is very difficult and I understand how scary the thought of opening up to a stranger can be. I hope to offer you compassion, understanding and a listening ear, so you feel at ease within our therapeutic relationship and your well-being goals can be addressed through non-threatening Creative therapy.

Deciding to attend therapy is a difficult and brave decision. It is important that you find a therapist with whom you can feel comfortable in being your authentic self, I aim to provide you with that experience. I believe there is no position or age from which positive change cannot be made and will support you in the process. Alternatively, if you have a goal that you wish to achieve, either personally or professionally, it is vital you find someone who can bring energy, enthusiasm and pragmatism to your sessions. I also have experience in the corporate space and provide seminars on a number of issues and coaching for groups.

In psychotherapy there is an opportunity to get to know yourself in depth and discover new ways of living your life. Often we have repetitive patterns and ways of thinking that can for instance cause suffering, frustration, anxiety and sadness in our life. Despite our best efforts to decide to behave and relate differently, we drift back to our old ways of being and behaving. In psychotherapy we will work at getting to know your unconscious inner life. A lot of feelings and thoughts we have are not conscious and psychotherapy gives you the opportunity to reflect and try out new ways when you feel change is needed.

Many of us suffer from anxiety, depression and stress during our lives. We may even experience trauma. As a person-centred counsellor trained in a pluralistic model, I have worked with various issues that people deal with on a daily basis. Therapy is a shared endeavour where a safe, open and non-judgemental space is essential to the therapy process.

We may use different words to describe what's going on for us when we are looking for therapy: unsure, fed up, low, empty, frustrated, anxious, panicky, over-thinking, unable to sleep, too sensitive, or like can't carry on... Perhaps feeling not in control, not belonging, invisible or wanting to escape, or lost. It can be overwhelming, taking too much from us. So starting therapy is right. We can use therapy space, free of judgement, expectation or failure, to talk it all through and work things out.

Welcome. Whatever has brought you to scroll these profiles, the right therapeutic relationship can help you be heard, seen and understood. The journey often starts in a place of discomfort: anxiety, bereavement, feeling lost, stuck or frustrated with repeated patterns of behaviour that you can't seem to shift (in life and relationships), physical or mental health problems or the pain of old wounds that haven't healed. These crisis moments are often a call to personal growth and development, and sometimes to find a new path in life. I can offer you a safe and non-judgemental space to explore your situation and begin to move forward.

Are you struggling to cope, feeling stuck, or overwhelmed by life’s challenges and demands? Do you find yourself anxious, lost or confused by things happening around you? Are you feeling disconnected relationally with your partner, family, friends or loved ones? Seeking help is bravery and the first step towards healing.
Every individual is unique and we all respond to our environment in different and unique ways. We all deserve to be heard and within each one of us is the ability to change, transform and evolve. One of the most insightful things I’ve learnt as a mental health practitioner is that we are products of our thoughts, experiences and environment. How we think affects our worldview and determines our success in life. Our thoughts affect our physical and mental health and this may have significant impact on our present and future. We will work together to explore your feelings and how to manage your thoughts and relationships.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
