I work with those who experience anger, anxiety, abuse, bereavement, depression, low self-esteem and trauma in its various guises.
I am, Karen, a qualified counsellor who practices using Person Centred and Psychodynamic therapies. I provide a confidential space for you to be accepted as you are. We work together to explore what you want to achieve in therapy. This may initially be unknown, so we work to clarify and explore, to discover anything that is concerning or causing you unrest/stress. The calm, quiet and confidential space I offer, provides a sanctuary where self-awareness may increase, and personal growth can happen.

Hi, I'm Linda. Taking the first step toward positive change can feel hard at times; Not knowing where to turn can leave you feeling anxious and alone. Climbing the mountain feels an impossible task. But, you've already found the courage and strength to start the process. Navigating our way through life's ups and downs can feel stressful and confusing. The effect on our anxiety levels can impact how we manage our everyday lives. I understand because I too have navigated some difficult paths along the way. Talking things through can help you find direction, reduce anxiety, low mood, and helps us view things with a renewed mindset.

I am a person centred counsellor specialising in working with anxiety, low self esteem, grief and anger.
Life doesn't get any easier does it? Juggling work, relationships and family can be stressful and confusing, leaving us feeling emotionally drained. Sometimes the harder we work to please others, the tougher we are on ourselves. This can make us feel less than good enough. Deeper feelings of anxiety, sadness and anger can be painful and scary, so we become very good at burying them until they build up and overwhelm us. If you are experiencing feelings that are hard to manage I can help you.

In psychotherapy there is an opportunity to get to know yourself in depth and discover new ways of living your life. Often we have repetitive patterns and ways of thinking that can for instance cause suffering, frustration, anxiety and sadness in our life. Despite our best efforts to decide to behave and relate differently, we drift back to our old ways of being and behaving. In psychotherapy we will work at getting to know your unconscious inner life. A lot of feelings and thoughts we have are not conscious and psychotherapy gives you the opportunity to reflect and try out new ways when you feel change is needed.

Are you struggling to cope, feeling stuck, or overwhelmed by life’s challenges and demands? Do you find yourself anxious, lost or confused by things happening around you? Are you feeling disconnected relationally with your partner, family, friends or loved ones? Seeking help is bravery and the first step towards healing.
Every individual is unique and we all respond to our environment in different and unique ways. We all deserve to be heard and within each one of us is the ability to change, transform and evolve. One of the most insightful things I’ve learnt as a mental health practitioner is that we are products of our thoughts, experiences and environment. How we think affects our worldview and determines our success in life. Our thoughts affect our physical and mental health and this may have significant impact on our present and future. We will work together to explore your feelings and how to manage your thoughts and relationships.

At various points in our lives, we all experience feelings, thoughts and events that we find challenging. You may be feeling anxious or depressed, finding it difficult to come to terms with something that has happened in the past, or worried about what the future will bring. Perhaps you feel stuck in a difficult situation, or caught between what seem like impossible choices. You may be seeking an opportunity to think about who you are, what is important to you, and the kind of life you want to lead.

Feeling nobody quite "Gets YOU?" Impulsive, disorganised, head scrambled, masking due to ADHD/ASD? Drugs or alcohol used to self medicate, relax or cope with stress but now noticed its getting out of control?  Anxiety and panic attacks starting to control your life but not sure the trigger? Or do you just have a sense something is wrong but struggle to open up or express how you feel to your partner, family or friends? The beauty of talking to a counsellor is I am neutral and independent of your situation which can make it easier to open up and explore your feelings and thoughts.

I have worked successfully with people suffering with stress, anxiety, depression, PTSD, complex PTSD and dissociative disorders and this includes survivors of rape and sexual abuse (as adults and in childhood).
I am an experienced, humanistic, relational counsellor . I trained and work integratively. This means I use several different models of counselling intertwined, leaning more to one than the others as required by the individual. These include Person Centred, CBT, Psychodynamic and Existential . Post qualifying, I have trained extensively in working with trauma. I believe the quality of the relationship between client and counsellor is very important. I see my clients in private, quiet and comfortable rooms in Gillingham town centre with public car parks available nearby and easy access to public transport link.

You may be considering counselling if you feel anxious a lot of the time, feel low or depressed, can't make sense of your emotions or just don't feel yourself. You may be struggling to accept a big change in your life. Or you may be thinking of making a change but finding it hard to trust your own decision-making. You may simply want someone to listen, without giving their own opinions.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
