Choosing to have counselling is an important decision and deciding who to work with even more so. It is important you feel your therapist is the ‘right one’ for you - that you will feel safe and able to trust them and their work. I have worked with a wide variety of clients and helped people work though issues such as bereavement, anxiety, depression, neurodiversity, trauma and relationship problems. I understand what it is to feel swamped by life and the struggles it can entail and I have many hours of experience helping others navigate a safe path through their issues. I am committed to helping you make the changes you desire.

For nearly 20 years I have worked extensively with individuals, families, couples and young people. My approach is integrative which means I draw on a number of therapeutic models to help tackle the complex needs that clients can present with. I am able to work with families, individuals and couples who are feeling ‘stuck’ and cannot see a way forward. I can be flexible in terms of appointments. I have an interest in attachments which can have a huge effect on how individuals manage their everyday lives.

Welcome, you may be looking for a therapist, counsellor or coach to address a specific issue, perhaps an experience that is impacting you now, or there may be a general feeling that something is not quite right. Therapy and counselling help you discover the real you, creating awareness, acknowledging and dealing with repressed feelings and getting in touch with your innate self-worth. Which, in turn, promotes personal autonomy and the resilience to deal with life's challenges. Life coaching clears unconscious patterns and beliefs and helps you to set and action goals to move towards living a fulfilling and nourishing life.

You can feel anxious and not know why, as though you are constantly on edge.
I specialise in working with low-self-esteem, to help individuals develop an improved understanding of themselves and others, so they can change how they think and feel about themselves, be more confident, less self-critical and feel more positive. Self-esteem refers to how we think and feel about ourselves, and the value we place on ourselves as a person. If we have a negative opinion of ourselves, feel we are less capable than others, or think we are not good enough, we may be experiencing low self-esteem. It is important to know that you are not alone. Low self-esteem is a common problem for many people.

Are you feeling stuck about the past? Perhaps the present is a source of stress? Or maybe you have a general feeling of uncertainty about the future? I am a very empathic and non-judgemental therapist with the benefit of a practical and solution-focused mind. I can help you identify and meet your missing emotional needs so that you can heal and stay mentally balanced; moving you on from states such as stress, anxiety, OCD, depression, anger, or addiction. This is a modern therapy with the added advantage of an optional guided imagery at the end of each session, as an extra 'boost' for feeling emotionally calm and in control again.

Anxiety, depression and other mental challenges can be debilitating. It's something that many of us live with each and every day and we need to find the best ways to deal with our emotions, what we are going through and how we react to certain situations. Being the best you is not easy, but you can do it. It is undoubtedly achievable no matter where you are in your life. Some may find difficulty showing up to their counselling sessions, some may think it's easier to talk online and some may find comfort with the presence of an animal in the room and even doing activities with the animal. Your needs are a priority.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
