Are you struggling to cope with life? Are you experiencing difficulties in your relationships? You may be feeling confused, anxious, frightened, alone, unable to make sense of how you are feeling. You may have some idea of what is troubling you or it may be less clear, but with an underlying feeling that somehow you're not ok. I work psychodynamically which means by attending carefully to all that you bring we can work together to understand the meaning behind your difficulties. With greater self awareness you will become more in control of your life and be better able to make informed choices.

My approach gives you an opportunity to work on presenting problems which might include “reducing drug and alcohol use, using recovery tools” An opportunity to explore “what you are in control of in your life and how to regain more control” “communication with a partner or work colleagues” a way to improve “your mental health such as anxiety and stress”.
An experienced BACP accredited counsellor working in central Winchester offering face to face counselling, specializing in mental health addictions and epilepsy. My approach underpinned by Gestalt therapy which can be integrated with a solution focus approach. I also practise EMDR. Historic life difficulties and the presenting current climate has seen many people struggle with their mental health and turn to unhealthy and destructive ways of coping. The misuse of drugs and alcohol, gambling, over eating, sex, pornography or gaming are often used as a way of coping with difficult memories, thoughts and feelings.

I offer a confidential, safe space to talk about those issues that are currently causing you concern and emotional pain. It can help to talk to an independent, qualified person when we have run out of ways of helping ourselves. Hello, I'm Chantal, a fully qualified BACP registered integrative counsellor. My focus is centred on you as the client, and I will draw on a range of theoretical and practical training in a way that is most supportive to you and your issues. . I am not there to just simply listen; I see the work as a collaboration between the two of us. I will, very much, be a part of the process with you and I am willing to say what I am seeing. You may begin to see patterns of responding that are no longer helpful and with this increase in self-awareness my aim is to support you in making any changes necessary to help restore your well-being.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
