Life can be hard. We can feel anxious, depressed, confused or alone. We may struggle to find happiness in ourselves, and our relationships with others. We may be trying to come to terms with loss or abuse. There may be things from the past that still trouble us, and it might not be easy to discuss our problems with friends or family. It can be a relief to talk in confidence with someone who will truly listen and see things from our own point of view. Someone who can support us while we make sense of our feelings and work with us at our own pace towards finding our own solutions. This is what I will provide for you.

You might turn to therapy for a number of reasons: having faced a life-changing event: trauma, bereavement, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, or low self- esteem. You may struggle with functioning day to day, or feel overwhelmed by feelings and emotions that you don’t understand. Past life events can also get in the way of living your life in the present moment, and you may struggle to connect with others and feel isolated. Perhaps you feel as though no one really listens, or understands what you are going through. This is where confidential help and support in the form of therapy could be the answer.

I work with lots of different issues but I have extensive experience supporting people to overcome anxiety and build confidence.
When it’s not always possible to chat to a friend or loved one about personal issues counselling can be really helpful. Using a warm and down to earth style my sessions will use techniques to help discover the underlying symptoms, using a non direct approach. This will allow us to explore any issues you have, develop ways to overcome them, and move forward positively at a pace that feels right for you. As a fully qualified counsellor I offer help if you suffer emotional from problems with low self esteem, relationships, work related stress, abuse, child related issues, abandonment, drug abuse and addiction, amongst many others.

I understand that the decision to start therapy is rarely made lightly, and taking that first step can feel overwhelming. You may be feeling apprehensive, anxious, and sceptical about sharing your innermost thoughts and emotions with a stranger. It takes immense courage to be vulnerable and talk about the difficulties you are experiencing, and I want you to know that I fully appreciate and respect your decision to seek help. You might be facing a specific problem that you want to address, such as relationship issues, anxiety. Alternatively, you may have a sense that something in your life is not quite right, but cannot identify it.

I have experience working with a wide range of issues such as abuse, trauma, anxiety and depression.
I am an experienced psychotherapist and am the manager and clinical lead for a counselling service at a university. I specialise in trauma, emotional distress, anxiety and depression. I draw upon different theories in order to provide the most appropriate therapeutic support to each of my clients, leading to good outcomes. I believe counselling can help us see the unhelpful patterns we find ourselves in and explain why they are happening. This can then lead to a shift in perspective, and help us work towards permanent. I believe my role is to assist clients through this process, and and support them move towards the life they want

Perhaps you are going through something that feels too overwhelming to tackle alone. People seek counselling for many reasons; a life crisis, relationship issues, a bereavement, work-related stress, lacking confidence, difficulty moving on from painful childhood experiences, a lack of purpose and meaning. Whatever your reasons, talking about your difficulties with someone who truly listens is the first step towards making them manageable. A strong therapeutic relationship can bring relief, support when it is most needed and transformative change.

You may or may not know in advance what the source of your difficulties may be. Part of our process is to explore together what has led you here. Every person is different. Amid the stresses of daily life, it’s easy to lose touch with our own deepest needs and feelings – until they become too painful or persistent to ignore.

I offer a safe, judgment-free space for people to explore whatever difficult experiences they may be going through. With over 10 years of experience as a counsellor, I have learned that counselling works best when the person feels that they can say the unsayable. My professional experience has taught when it works well counselling provides a way for a person to understand themselves and their situation better, and through that equip them to make clearer decisions and embrace change. I can offer sessions in person, online, or via telephone.

I'm Andy and as a qualified person-centred counsellor, I strongly believe we all have the ability to navigate life's challenges by drawing on our own experience and capabilities. My role is to enable clients to explore whatever they choose in order to gain a deeper understanding of how it's impacting them, enabling them to create positive change. I do this through actively listening and offering useful reflections of themes I may notice, including any changes over time. I ask clients questions that encourage them to think about their experiences in new ways and never judge or lead anyone into talking about something uncomfortable.

Hello, I'm Chloe Johnstone, a dedicated psychotherapist with a passion for supporting individuals. I offer collaborative psychotherapy with my use of the Relational Approach, and my Integrative training allows me to draw from various approaches, such as: Transactional Analysis, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) and Somatic Therapy. Relational psychotherapy emphasises the importance of the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client. Together, we would consider the role of interpersonal dynamics and how past relationships, especially in early life, influence your current psychological state.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
