I am trained to work with the nervous system, to ease panic attacks & anxiety.
Hi I'm Louise, I'm a Humanistic counsellor, I am honest, approachable and authentic. Searching for the right therapist can be hard, finding someone you can trust and feel at ease with is the first step. To help you connect with me, I offer warmth and kindness, I really care for my clients. Many people see counselling as a place where they talk and the therapist listens, I will listen, but I will also support, resource you and help you find your way to wellbeing and calm. Together we can unpick any confusion, ease anxiety and bring light to the darker parts of your world. So let's work as a team to make things better.

I realise that seeking therapy may feel daunting and I know how important it is that you find a therapist you can trust with your innermost thoughts and feelings. Perhaps you have come to a time in your life when you feel you need some extra support for whatever challenges and difficulties you are facing. It may be that you have suffered a loss, a relationship issue or experienced a significant life event or that you feel the weight of depression or anxiety. Perhaps you have decided the time is right to try to make some changes in your life.

Being human isn't easy... We all have times in life where things feel too much to cope with alone. Maybe you feel stuck, or lost. Maybe you’ve lost sight of what is important, or feel like life lacks hope or purpose. It might have been a long time coming and you’ve been feeling like this for a while, or maybe something has happened which has left you shocked, numb or filled with sadness, anger, or fear.

We all find relationships and intimacy challenging - being close to people challenges our beliefs about ourselves and our trusted ways of relating do not always serve us well. When we get stuck over and over again in our intimate, family or work relationships, it is often due to our deeply buried or unconscious beliefs about ourselves. Many of my clients express what a relief it can be to share their problems and to realise that they are not weird or sick. We all struggle for a reason. In a group it can be especially helpful to realise that you are not alone - there are other people struggling with 'what it means to be human'.

The CBT approach is ACT (Acceptance and Commitment therapy): directly for overcoming anxiety via homework tasks (journalling alongside mindfulness exercises of present moment) so when it happens, you ACT differently, changing it.
How do you choose a therapist? Personal recommendations are invaluable and, also, your individual needs might be different. My endeavour is to facilitate your self awareness as well as your awareness of others and situations. Whichever modality of therapy you choose our work together gently directs your awareness to ‘what is happening but, also, to ‘how you are viewing and applying yourself’ when in difficulty. This can be radically different to many ‘non directive’ therapies and can involve real change quite quickly! Professional bodies: UKCP for psychotherapy and psychotherapeutic counselling BABCP for CBT

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
