My focus in therapy is on a person's life and relationships, past and present. I regard symptoms or behaviour patterns as expressions of distress connected to life circumstances. My style is fairly active, but I'm careful to listen and check what I have heard. I pay attention to a person's narrative, including successes as well as difficulties. I am happy to share knowledge that might help my client or point to resources. Most of my work is relatively short term (12 sessions or less). Typically I start off with a questionnaire which includes client ideas about the goals of our work together.
My training is as a systemic therapist so I am concerned with connections and relationships. I bring this perspective to work with whole families, to couple therapy and to my work with individuals.
My attention to client skills and resources, and to existing support systems (e.g. family and friends), encourages positivity and optimism, albeit in the face of difficulties.
