I am taking a sabbatical from the end of May 2024 so will only be offering short term work until then. I offer counselling and psychotherapy for children, young people, parents and adults. Young people can often have worries that they find hard to talk to their parents about. Talking to someone outside the family can often make all the difference. I offer space for parents to talk about their worries and work on their parenting strategies. Sometimes I work with a parent and child together if there are particular relationship issues. I also work with adults for individual problems.

Do you get road rage? Do you swear when angry? Has anger damaged your relationship/s? Do you suffer angrily in silence? Is your anger causing you depression? Anger is a symptom and often has its deep roots in childhood experiences, especially in situations where there was a withdrawal of love or emotional neglect. The foundation of our emotional regulation and expression is often laid during our early childhood. We have emotional needs for affection, attention, and validation. When these needs go unmet, anger can become a coping mechanism.

I believe that the 3 most common reasons leading people to seek therapy are Anger, Sadness & Belief System. This belief system could be one you were taught by somebody else or one you have created that is not serving you, for example feeling that you are not enough or that you are unloveable. I offer safety and support with the unbearable. I provide guidance in your discovery and unpacking of baggage. I use creative methods: art, body work, play therapy and nature.

I also work with young children who may be having difficulties with anger, parental separation, bereavement and loss, child abuse, self-esteem and friendship issues.
As a psychotherapist I can help you to overcome emotional pain and unrest. I believe most people experience difficulties in their relationships with others as well as themselves, which is why a good therapeutic relationship is the foundation of the healing process. I do this by building and strengthening the therapeutic relationship between us, creating a safe, non-judgmental space for you to share your thoughts and feelings. The ultimate goal would be to let you explore your strategies in managing emotional conflicts, enabling you to move forward. I have extensive experience in this field with very positive results.

These are effective in helping people overcome difficulties such as low mood, anxiety, anger, stress, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, coping with the loss a loved one, the impact of trauma or adjusting to new life circumstances.
Hi, I’m Ilan! I’m a Clinical Psychologist and Director of The Oak Tree Practice. I want to tell you a bit more about myself, as I realise selecting a psychologist can be a tough task! I feel very privileged to be able to say I love what I do and always have, ever since I started volunteering for ChildLine in 2007. Following this, I’ve had experience working with a wide variety of clients including children, young people, adults, older adults, military personnel, individuals with learning disabilities, neurodevelopmental disorders and neurological conditions. I have also furthered my studies through the completion of undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees. All this aside, one of the most important parts of my work is building relationships with those sitting opposite me. I have always believed that you can have all the training and knowledge in the world, but if the client doesn’t return, none of this can be put into action. Therefore, my first aim is always to provide a warm, compassionate and non-judgmental space where we can work on the clients’ difficulties together.

Over the years, I have work with clients on short-term and long-term arrangements, dealing with depression, anxiety, suicidal crisis, anger, low self-esteem, panic disorders, relationship issues, trauma, questions of spirituality and meaning, such as Who am I?. From my own experience of therapy, insight some times is not enough. Therefore I might ask you to complete certain tasks designed to help you develop more effective skills. This approach often involves homework assignments. I draw on many techniques, including visualisation, dream exploration, drawing, role-play, and the most familiar method: conversation between two people.

I am a warm, friendly and creative MNCPS (Accred) (MBACP) adult, children and young people's counsellor. I specialise in working with children and young people aged 9 to 25. Adolescence can be a challenging time for young people and their families. Difficulties at school/university/work, worries about the future, exam pressure, peer and family dynamics, bereavement and divorce, (among other issues) can be difficult to negotiate. Such issues can cause anxiety, low self-esteem, anger issues, lack of motivation, mood swings, depression and coping mechanisms such as self-harm that can be confusing and frightening.

Anger Management Counsellors

How long does therapy take for anger management?

Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?

Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?

Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
