I'm Gemma. I'm a clinical psychologist with a passion for working with adults, children and families as well as wider systems around people. I work with couples, and parents who are struggling with the behaviour of their children, particularly aggression or other risky behaviours. I also work with couples who are experiencing significant levels of conflict and harmful or abusive behaviour. Sometimes, my work is with parents who have separated and are trying to work out how to reduce the impact of this separation on their children, or repair or reconstruct relationships that have become strained or distant.

I use a mixture of models to work with couples, parents and families, particularly emotionally focused therapy techniques (EFT) with couples and non-violent resistance (NVR), which is a brilliant approach to reducing conflict and aggression in families. I also offer video interaction guidance (VIG) to help to increase nurturing aspects of relationships.

I use different practices depending on the kinds of issues someone is facing. I will always start with an assessment - which is usually done in 1 to 2 sessions with adults or children, or four sessions for couples (together, one partner, the other partner, together again). Then we decide on a good pathway for therapeutic work collaboratively.

Parenting children who experience anxiety

This group is based on an evidence based model of working with parents of children who struggle with anxiety. We currently have a pilot running with Chorlton based primary schools, which is free to access. We are also accepting referrals for an independent group that will have spaces parents can pay for themselves. It is a great group for parents who would like to learn more about supporting their children to overcome anxious experiences and develop resilience. Parents of children who are experiencing anxiety, OCD, separation anxiety, difficulties attending school and other anxiety related difficulties would benefit from this group.

Parenting children who can be aggressive

This group is for parents who are concerned about their children’s emotion regulation. Maybe your children are hitting out at home, or worrying you in other ways. The group uses non-violent resistance, an empowering model for parents of children who are expressing their distress through aggression and controlling behaviour. It has a very supportive element which parents find helpful and grounding. We are accepting referrals for this group but do not yet have a start date or time of the week for the sessions.
