uncontrollable anger, shouting, panic, blaming, violence, anxiety, depression, addiction, suicidal thoughts.
Hello and welcome! My name is Alex and I offer in-person sessions in Reading (town centre), or online via zoom. I am a fully qualified, BACP-registered, counsellor with a proven track record of helping people work through all kinds of problems. I think that part of the problem we all share is that we grew up in a society that didn't really understand human emotions. Thus, we quickly learned that emotions are a problem and that the only proper way of dealing with them is to shut them off, brush them under the carpet and put on a brave face.

My experience in counselling is mainly with people who have suffered childhood trauma and with issues of addiction.
I'm a counsellor who brings calm and peacefulness into the chaotic and hectic situations of modern times. I am able to maintain the calm and serenity required when dealing with issues and experiences that could bring painful feelings and overwhelming emotions. I use a Person-Centred approach to counselling. I believe that everyone has the innate ability to resolve their psycho-emotional issues and decide on the best direction to take in order to live a happy and fulfilling life. I can create the right environment so that each individual can explore the best way to achieve this for themselves.

I am trauma trained and addiction oriented.
It can be hard to reach out for help when we feel lost, depressed and hopeless. Are you struggling to cope with strong emotions? Are you searching for a way out of repetitive self-sabotage behaviours? Counselling is about a safe and encouraging relationship where you can talk about those hurting parts of yourself and become aware of other parts that can give you choices and hope. I want to offer you a confidential, empathic and non-judgemental space to share your thoughts and feelings.

It might not seem it, but life is more than what you are going through right now. You could be immersed in a complex situation, or maybe need a little support. Recognising that you cannot do it by yourself if the first step to healing, to be able to enjoy life to its full capacity. I’m here to help, my name is Emma. I have special interest and experience in bereavement and loss, anxiety, “not feeling part of the group”. Unfortunately for those that have not had support, it might have led to self-harm, addiction.

I work with a range of issues including: anxiety, addiction, depression, chemsex, gender identity, gender dysphoria and transitioning, pain and chronic illness, psychosexual issues, forensics/sexual offending, sexuality and sexual identity, suicidality and self-harm.
I’m interested in what works. For you. So I take a pluralistic, integrative approach and don’t limit myself to one particular way of working. Whether you’re seeing me for counselling, schema-based therapy or psychosexual therapy, I'll tailor my approach to suit your needs. And it’s the relationship between you and I which will be central to the work. Because I’m not a friend, colleague or family member, you can think the unthinkable and speak the unspeakable in a judgement-free space. You can rely on me to be honest with you, and bring into your awareness your blind spots, and things on the edge of your awareness you might missing.

Hi, I’m Daniela and for the past 7 years I have helped people make changes so they can live more fulfilling and joyful lives. Growing up in a high conflict environment I became curious about psychology to learn alternatives way to communicate , that didn’t end in an argument . This led me to train as a therapist and later as a systemic practitioner at Tavistock , as I understand how people can’t be viewed in isolation but as part of a broader network. I believe that the key to creating lasting change is in improving the quality of our relationships and noticing the patterns that makes us feel stuck .

Addiction Counsellors

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
