My Name is Mark. I specialise in helping people overcome and gain recovery from Sex Addiction, and have been doing so since 2009. During this time I have tailored my style of therapy to enable my clients to not only gain as much insight to their own addiction, but also the tools to live a more fulfilling life free of addiction. I still feel sex addiction is a taboo area in today’s society where very few people including general counsellors do not fully understand the severity and impact caused.

To hold onto issues whether from childhood or a few years ago can keep us in a place that is painful and confusing and can seem impossible to move on from. This can lead to mental health problems such as anxiety or depression or some form of addiction that keeps you stuck. By starting to talk through these issues with a counsellor it can lead to a freedom and understanding about yourself and then you are able to move on with your life.

From time to time everyone experiences stress, sadness, anger, relational conflict and grief which we often suffer alone. Accepting help from others can be difficult but maybe you feel you’ve toughing it out on your own for too long. Whether you are struggling with an identifiable trauma or you’ve reached a point where recurring feelings are becoming unmanageable; a course of psychotherapeutic counselling may help you make sense of what is happening and enable you to gain and maintain some stability. Feelings of fear, anger, rejection and lack of confidence are difficult areas and discussing them with friends too raw and personal.

So, let's talk about YOU. 'I want to be free from anxiety,''I will never be good enough,''Who am I and can I be me?.' Maybe it's crippling anxiety where you're fearful of every situation, whether it's the now or related to a past trauma. Maybe you lack confidence in body & self, disliking yourself and feeling like you don't know who you are which causes you to be afraid to be you. Perhaps it's attachment patterns in relationships, fear of trusting due to being let down & abandoned, the terror of ending up hurt and alone. Well, I can help. After all, other's telling us that 'It'll be okay' is well meaning but does it help?

Asking for help can be really daunting. If you are here, reading this, and have recognised that you might benefit from the kind of support that therapy offers, then you have already taken a big step. There can be lots of reasons you might benefit from therapy. You might be dealing with a difficult time, such as an illness, bereavement, a separation. You might be feeling stressed, anxious, lost or low more often than feels ‘ok’. You might want to understand yourself better, why you feel and behave the way you do, or want to feel more alive.

I am an accredited, fully insured therapeutic counsellor having studied Transactional Analysis psychotherapy, based in East Sussex; working with adults on a one-to-one basis, either in-person or on-line. I have a corporate background which compliments my work and provides context to some of the challenges my clients face. This mixture of experience allows me to better understand the struggles of how our 'public face' can often feel at odds with our inner world and of the pressures and expectations of self and others that often feel overwhelming.

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
