I don't this area is necessarily representing a simple on/off for only this particular issue, and that its mode is absolutely egocentric or magnanimous;
I think it rather represents egocentric in the way of short-term goals rather than long-term goals... not necessarily how you form your identity and treat yourself.
BTW, It sounds like in your theoretical hypothesis, you are actually referring to yourself. I'd advice mindful meditation to you, along with running 3-5times a week. Skip all processed sugar.
You should see a noticable improvement in a very short time.
