Leadership presence greatly matters. During times of uncertainty, cultivating leadership presence can make the difference between success, mediocrity, and failure. Unlike executive presence, leadership presence goes beyond hierarchical status, charisma, authority, and ego-based image. Leadership presence is distinguished by the ability to authentically and respectfully connect with and influence others. It is essential for empowering individuals and teams to successfully navigate through change, resolve conflict, and foster commitment, innovation, and alignment.

Power of Presence

Leaders who demonstrate presence in their interactions cultivate deep trust, connection, engagement, and motivation. In my various leadership roles, I’ve experienced both ends of the leadership presence continuum. One senior leader I reported to would simultaneously listen to a conference call, check and respond to emails and texts, and skim written documents during our infrequent meetings. Their multi-tasking behavior communicated a profound lack of interest in me and our conversation. In contrast, another leader I reported to would schedule regular meetings, put away their phone during our time together, make eye contact, and completely focus on our conversation. As you can imagine, sitting with the second leader fostered deep trust, engagement, commitment, inspiration, and innovation. I felt seen, heard, and valued as a professional and human being. Perhaps you have also had similar experiences.

Leadership Presence Skill Sets

Leadership presence greatly impacts culture, morale, commitment, retention, innovation, and performance. It’s not something you’re born with. Learning and practicing the seven essential leadership presence skill sets can build and strengthen trust, generate an authentic, deep connection, inspire and motivate others, and facilitate a positive impact on a myriad of levels.

Self-awareness

Self-awareness, coupled with self-control, is foundational for leadership presence. This skill set empowers you to recognize, acknowledge, and shift your thoughts, emotional triggers, judgements, and meanings as they occur. Self-awareness and self-control empower you to refocus and strategically manage thoughts and emotions that distract from being fully present to the person and situation in front of you.

Humble Confidence

Confidence, the hallmark of executive presence, is a necessary but insufficient quality in leadership presence. Humble confidence helps mitigate ego-based behaviors and serves to foster the requisite psychological safety for building engagement, motivation, connection, and high-impact teams. Humility fosters fruitful collaborations, openness to feedback, curiosity, lifelong learning, and a growth mindset.

Active Listening

Active listening entails the ability to be focused and fully present to the context, current situation, and especially to the person you are with. Skilled active listeners communicate both verbally and nonverbally to the person they’re with that they are being seen, heard, understood, and valued as a professional and human being.

Empathy

Empathic presence incorporates the skill set of meeting and accepting people where they’re at emotionally. Asking respectful, open-ended questions helps leaders more fully understand and value others’ unique perspectives, experiences, psychological impact, and personal meanings. Empathy significantly reduces the likelihood of leaders making faulty assumptions and judgements, and promotes a culture of trust, engagement, commitment, and positive impact.

Authenticity

Authentic leaders role model the quality of integrity. They consistently align their actions with their genuine thoughts, feelings, and values, build trust and stability, mitigate ambiguity, and support a psychologically safe culture for others to do the same. Authenticity strengthens Leadership Presence, credibility, and reliability. Authentic leaders embody integrity and commitment, and follow through.

Values-Based Visioning

Visioning from a values-based perspective demands the simultaneous consideration of personal and organizational values and mission, as well as human, financial, and political realities. A values-based vision aligns individual, team, and organizational needs, goals, and collaborative relationships. This serves to promote timely, relevant, strategic decision-making and strengthen commitment to shared goals.

Respectful Communication

Respectful communication requires leaders to be both visible and approachable, and conveys that leaders value others’ perspectives, experiences, insights, and expertise. This type of communication builds the essential psychological safety for engaged, open, and honest dialogues and reduces misunderstanding and defensiveness. It creates the space for collaboration, innovation, and commitment to a shared vision and goals.
