Russell Friedman

Russell Friedman arrived at the Grief Recovery Institute 25 years ago, on the heels of a second divorce and a bankruptcy. Like most people, he didn't realize that grief applies to many losses, not just death. After completing his own unresolved grief, he learned how to help grievers, and how to train therapists, social workers, clergy, funeral directors, and others who interact with grieving people. He is the "grief recovery expert" on CNN, appearing in the aftermath of 9/11; when Andrea Yates drowned her five children; and after Michael Jackson died. He appeared with Matt Lauer on the Today Show to help parents guide their children in dealing with grief. Along with Institute Founder, John W. James, Russell has pioneered 2500 Grief Recovery Method groups throughout the world. Visit the Grief Recovery Method® Guidance Center at
