Richard H. Smith, Ph. D., is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Kentucky (Ph.D. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill). His research is on social emotions such as awe, shame, jealousy, envy, and schadenfreude. He has edited or co-edited two volumes on envy, Envy: Theory and Research, 2008; Envy at Work and in Organizations, 2016, and has a recent book on schadenfreude, The Joy of Pain: Schadenfreude and the Dark Side of Human Nature, 2013, all with Oxford University Press.
The aim of Social Joy and Pain is to explore the pleasures and displeasures that result from our learning about and interacting with other people.
