Jan Chozen Bays, M.D., is a pediatrician and Zen teacher who has been practicing and teaching mindful eating for over twenty years. She graduated from Swarthmore College and did her medical and post graduate pediatric training at the University of California at San Diego. She is a staff physician at Legacy Emanuel Children's Hospital in Portland, Oregon, specializing in the evaluation of child abuse and neglect.
She has practiced Zen Buddhism since 1973, and was authorized as a Zen teacher by Roshi Taizan Maezumi in 1983. She helped found Great Vow Zen Monastery outside of Portland, Oregon, and serves as teacher-in-residence and co-abbot along with her husband, Hogen Bays.
Bays has published a number of articles about Zen Buddhism as well as medical articles and book chapters about child abuse. She lectures internationally on child abuse issues and on recognition and treatment of compassion fatigue among professionals who work intimately with human suffering. Her books include Mindful Eating: A Guide to Rediscovering a Healthy and Joyful Relationship to Food (2009) and Jizo Bodhisattva: Guardian of Children, Travelers and Other Voyagers (2002), both by Shambhala Publishing.
