NON 12-STEP PROGRAM
Sunshine Coast Health Centre is a private, licensed, residential addiction treatment facility for men. While other programs focus on abstinence or reducing harm, we believe that the recovery process needs to move beyond mere healing. Instead, we help our clients experience personal transformation and full integration into society. Our programs are based largely on the theory and practice of Meaning-Centered Therapy (MCT), developed by psychologist Dr. Paul T. P. Wong. Dr. Wong was heavily influenced by Viktor Frankl and used personal meaning as a way to organize different therapies such as existential psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioural therapy, narrative therapy, and positive psychology into a unified therapeutic approach. We treat the four elements of what it means to be a human being - the physical, psychological, social and spiritual. Our residential alcohol & drug rehabilitation program follows a daily schedule of activities that focuses on long-term wellness and success. Combined, our 30-, 42-, 60-, and 90-day programs accept a maximum of 47 clients, allowing you to be on a first-name basis with staff and peers. DETOX, MEDICAL, AND PSYCHIATRIC ASSESSMENT
Upon arrival, our nursing staff will promptly admit you to our 8-bed medical detox unit. Having detox services on-site lets us provide immediate medical care to clients instead of waiting for them to withdraw from drugs and alcohol beforehand. Within 24 hours of admission, all clients are provided a medical assessment to determines their length of stay in the medical unit and whether further testing for co-existing medical conditions (such as liver damage, diabetes, etc.) is needed. Government-funded treatment centres do not provide such extensive medical assessments. One week after admission, all clients receive a psychiatric assessment. This is critical for creating a treatment plan, which may include addressing mental health issues such as depression, trauma, and anxiety. Psychiatric assessments are rarely performed in government-funded treatment centres and many other private treatment centres do not have psychiatric services. Those that do often leave it up to a client's counsellor to decide whether a psychiatrist is warranted. TRAUMA PROGRAM
The trauma program is available to all clients who are struggling with interpersonal and/or work-related stress (e.g. occupational trauma and PTSD) and focuses on (1) how clients can self-regulate to deal with dissociation, anxiety, depression, anger, and other symptoms of trauma, and (2) how clients can pursue a fulfilling life, in spite of suffering. Although there is a Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) component in the trauma program, therapies that focus on the trauma experience are kept to a minimum. While clients usually bring up their trauma experiences during the course of treatment, therapists do not focus on these experiences. It is, therapeutically necessary to validate these experiences, but the emphasis is on how clients can begin to pursue a more fulfilling life while suffering from trauma symptoms. Trauma therapies include Defensive Coping Skills (Affect Self-Regulation), Existential Coping Skills and Psychiatric Assessment and Treatment. Complementary Trauma Therapies include Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), Hypnotherapy and Active Meditation, Somatic Therapy, Therapeutic Exercise, and Therapeutic Recreation.
