Clarity is my hope for each person I see, whether we use Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy, Narrative approaches, EMDR, Mindfulness, yoga, polyvagal theory, or creative arts expression. Regardless if your struggle is with depression, anxiety, an eating disorder, or trauma, clarity means a better awareness and understanding of yourself in the current situation. Knowing yourself allows you to make choices best for you, consciously. It can be challenging to unravel and understand all of the often conflicting messages we hear and give ourselves, but it is crucial. This is the work I will support and guide you in.

You are Tired of feeling stuck. You want life to look and feel different but nothing you have tried has helped. You know there must be another way. You Snap more easily with your partner, your children, your loved ones and the Guilt shows up. You Know you can do better, but just feel lost and overwhelmed. You're tired of feeling not good enough when you are putting in 120% Every Day. You're a parent trying to juggle all the balls and you feel alone. The lack of sleep is taking it's toll and you're Googling "gentle" sleep consultants hoping more sleep will make a difference, but can't imagine leaving your baby to Cry It Out.

Truth be told, all of us go through many story lines and create our own unique narratives as we go about our daily lives. We are the authors of our lives. And in therapy, I truly respect that. You will see in our sessions, as you and I work together to build a therapeutic relationship, I will make every effort to help you make sense of your unique experiences and support you on your journey. I have extensively worked with adolescents, adults, and seniors.

The pressure is soul-crushing. Life looks great on paper but you’re burnt out. You were expected to be the perfect child. Speak and act right, best the best, achieve. Mistakes meant you failed. As an adult, there’s no room for rest. You’ll be bored. Seen as weak. It’s exhausting keeping up the façade. You’ve tried therapy to help with your stress, overwhelming thoughts, and unhappiness, but you were overbooked. You tried to squeeze it in, but finding the right therapist who didn’t judge felt impossible. I understand because I’ve been where you are. I was bullied at school and work, told “Get lost you Paki, go home to your country.”

You search for therapists but don’t know if you will go through the session because you’re afraid of what you might discover? Sometimes you may not even know why you feel the way you do. As a full time working mother, I get how hard it is to always be stressed, to feel frustrated, and overwhelmed. It’s hard prioritizing mental health when you are already burdened with so many responsibilities whether finances, home, kids, school, or work. Except, when you finally do put yourself first you realize how liberating it is...to be in control of your emotions, to have the coping mechanisms to help you through the difficult days...

Women's Issues Counsellors

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
