I work from a humanistic perspective which takes a positive view of human nature and emphasizes the uniqueness of the individual. The humanistic approach supports individuals to realize their potential through self-directed growth and by exploring meaning, values, and personal responsibility. I will support you to find, within yourself, the choices, behaviors, and directions that have integrity for you and; to explore the steps and tools to help you with your goals.

You don't need to have it all figured out to come here. Maybe you are feeling stuck, overwhelmed, deep in grief, or just carrying more than you know how to hold. You might not even know exactly what you need yet...and that's okay! In our work together, we will make space for all of it. Over time, you will notice a growing sense of clarity, more ease in your body and a deeper trust in yourself. All small shifts that open the door to new possibilities.

You have taken an important step seeking support, I am here to help! Navigating life can feel heavy and overwhelming. Most of us could use some help facing our challenges and the thoughts, feelings, and behaviours associated with them. I am known for creating a safe space where clients can explore these challenges deeply and without judgement, because I know sharing your experiences with someone new can be daunting. Everyone has the capacity to learn and grow from their experiences, but not every technique works on every individual. My approach is to work with the client to find the specific tools and resources that will help them

My name is Toby Rader, as a Narrative Therapist I believe that people are multi-storied. I am most interested in exploring the narrative's that make up your story. Whether that is re-membering those you have lost through crafting a new relationship with grief or engaging in an externalizing conversation about depression & anxiety. I work alongside individuals, couples and families, primarily focusing on adults and elders. I am a neurodivergent person (Autism) and parent. My Autism diagnosis came late I my life.

I truly believe treatment is a collaborative partnership between counsellor and client. Together, we will design an effective plan that recognizes your personal strengths, challenges, and goals. I use warmth, humour, and authenticity in my approach to make each client feel comfortable and to build a strong, positive therapeutic connection. I am especially passionate about supporting clients living with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), anxiety, Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviours (BFRBs), chronic pain, those navigating life after a traumatic brain injury, or younger clients needing activity-based or play therapy.

Looking for a counsellor or trauma therapist? Not sure where to start? Are you wanting to make changes, feel more at ease or comfortable in your body? Many of the people I work with have experienced painful things, either in childhood, adolescence, adulthood or throughout their life and it’s affected how they feel now. Sometimes it is numbing or quick to anger. The journey of becoming whole and healing can be started in a caring, safe space that is created in counselling.

Mari Mari and welcome! Seeking support takes courage, and choosing this first step can feel overwhelming. If you feel isolated, stuck, or weighed down by patterns of pain, we can work together to find new ways of coping, healing, and reconnecting with your strengths. Together, we can create a path toward greater balance, understanding, clarity, and relief. Through my own trauma healing and professional training, I have learned that we are never alone in our struggles — and that there is always a way forward, one step at a time

Are you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or stuck in patterns that don’t match the life you want. Maybe you’re navigating social anxiety, ADHD, burnout, or a complicated relationship with technology. You might be a parent worried about your teen, or an adult trying to understand old wounds, emotional triggers, or communication struggles. Underneath it all, you want clarity, steadiness, and a healthier way forward.

I support clients managing emotional challenges, BPD traits, depression, OCD, perfectionism, negative internal dialogue, addiction, grief, trauma, and difficult family dynamics. Together we explore a client's history, experience, emotions, and develop better skills for managing challenges. Often maladaptive coping strategies are no longer serving the client. Developing relational intimacy with others, and more compassionate communication with self is integral to my work with individuals and families. Together we find solutions for healing and moving forward in healthy ways so clients can align more authenticly with themselves.

I believe strongly that every person has the innate ability to enact the changes they wish to see in their lives, and I strive to be a support and guide during that growth. Often when we are feeling depressed, anxious, or out of sync with our loved ones we feel like there is something wrong with us; we struggle to connect our current feelings with our previous experiences. Or perhaps we make the connection on a thinking level but are unable to gain a felt sense of wellness. I will help you make sense of your history and your current experiences, allowing for a deep connection to the self and, in turn, deep connection to others.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.

Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
