I believe that people have unlimited capacity. I work to support others in exploring the challenges in their own lives; relationships; and that arise in pursuit of goals. My professional background in mental health and substance use (addictions) has offered me experience working with others to address complex challenges since beginning in 2013. It is a privilege to join others on their journey and I am fortunate to engage in this work on the traditional lands of the Lekwungen Peoples.

I believe in an individualized, caring and respectful approach when working with clients to become more resilient and effective in their lives. Many people believe that the skills and motivation needed to maneuver all of life’s obstacles are automatically within all of us. But many of us learn ineffective ways of communicating, develop unhealthy patterns or find ourselves stuck with no idea of how to move forward. Having a dedicated time to examine patterns, build skills and develop a deeper understanding of ones’ strengths can help build a greater sense of wellness and clarity in our lives.

Childhood and adult experiences can impact the way we manage life. At times it can affect our connection with others, our ability to feel happy and our mental health. Reaching out for help can be a first step in recovering our sense of self, building health coping tools and feeling connected to our lives. Though counselling change is possible.

Accepting new clients! I help young adults to navigate challenges with school, relationships, career development, and self exploration. I understand this is such a confusing time and I can help you find clarity in the direction of your life, and to improve communication, boundaries, and self worth. Together we'll explore the interaction of your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours to determine your strengths, and what you would like to build upon. My aim is for you to develop insight into your values, patterns, and beliefs, and to then evaluate which ones are helpful and which ones are holding you back from your greatest fulfillment.

My clients are introspective, hardworking, and determined. They appreciate my wide experience, my appreciation of their lives, and my complete ignorance of their situations. We make quick progress and lasting changes once we all realize that we don't really know what's going on. I am usually unsure and defer to you. Quite a few people take that as a license to indulge themselves, which is fine, but doesn't require me. I'm most interested in what I understand the least, which are the foundations of emotion, mind, body, and spirit. Wherever you go, I can follow, even into what's crazy (especially!), but you're always the expert.

Would you like to understand your triggers and what core beliefs might be contributing to your stress, anxiety or depression? For many, the current world crisis is amplifying their pain, stress, grief, fear and despair. As children, we were not taught how to cope constructively with stress and strong emotions so naturally, without the skillset, many people are feeling lost. By learning the skills and gaining capacity, more freedom and joy is possible. Regardless of circumstances, there is always a way to move forward, one step at a time.

The deepest desire of a human is to belong…to be heard…and to be accepted… Sometimes life presents us with difficulties that are tough to manage or resolve on our own. There are times when we need to ask for help in order to find ourselves and to move forward. As a person and a counsellor, I know that life’s challenges can happen at all stages of our lives at multiple levels and that every situation is unique to us alone. Circumstances that can challenge how we think, how we perceive, how we believe and how we respond.

Nice to meet you, I’m Amy. Born and raised in Victoria, British Columbia, I live on the West Coast with my husband and three children. I have been a recreational athlete for most of my life in various sports, and firmly believe a sense of adventure is inseparable from well being. My curiosity about people and human nature has led me to earn a few degrees in psychology and pursue a professional career as a register clinical counsellor. For over a decade I have worked with clients with mild to moderate mental health challenges who are focused on pursuing a meaningful and productive life.

Vulnerability can make us feel very uncomfortable, but if we view it as a transition, into higher self-esteem/confidence & therefore more life resilience then it is much healthier to forge ahead to find a therapist who can support us. Finding the best fit in seeking a therapist is the most important step in relieving your stress. Many of us struggle with unhappiness, anxiety, depression, suicide ideation, sleep deprivation, separation, divorce, conflict resolution, trauma, relationship, and parenting issues, emotion regulation, communication and assertiveness, boundaries, personal development, caregiver burden and so much more

I have been practicing Social Work & Counselling in non profit, clinical and therapeutic settings for over 18 years with people of all ages. I've had the privilege of working with various vulnerable populations and have been rewarded by learning through their resiliency, knowledge and strength. Working from a bio-psycho-social and neurodiversity affirming space, has best informed my practice. I enjoy helping others build skills and strengths in self advocacy, self compassion and a develop a deeper understanding of identifying their belief systems.

How can I find a therapist in V8Z?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or province where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

How much does therapy cost?

Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $3200 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
