I have been a mental health counsellor/therapist for 30 years. In my experience, the two most important factors in therapy are trust and safety. I believe trust is earned by the therapist and safety is experienced by the client as therapy progresses. What I have learned from my clients is that even when they experienced hopelessness at first, change was possible, and when there was change, no matter how small, they felt hopeful. My aim is to support clients and help them identify and achieve their short and long term goals, at school, at work, in their family, and private lives.

Hi, I’m Farah, and I’m here to support you through whatever you’re facing. I work with individuals who are navigating anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, or simply feeling stuck or unfulfilled in their lives. If you’re going through a difficult time — whether it’s a recent event or something you’ve been carrying for a long while — you don’t have to go through it alone. If you are feeling lost in your career, are experiencing conflict in relationships, or struggling with self-esteem and confidence, I offer a safe space where you can explore what’s going on, reconnect with your inner strengths, and begin to move forward.

I firmly believe we all want to feel better and live fully, and that we already carry the capacity to do so. As a mother, artist and therapist, I help rediscover that inner resource with grounded support, counselling, parts work and creative tools. You deserve a space where you feel safe, understood and able to express yourself. Whether you’re navigating stress, trauma, immigration, parenting struggles or patterns that feel stuck, we’ll co-create that space, and learn to meet the “full catastrophe of living” (Jon Kabat-Zinn) with curiosity, resilience and care — in my Burnaby studio or online.

We all live complex lives and are having to face an ever-changing environment. This can be immensely stressful. We all experience challenges in our lives but we do not always have the clarity or skills to effectively navigate our way through them. We then either get stuck or continue to go through life living on auto-pilot. To create a meaningful life, we need to reconnect with ourselves, the things we value and fine tune our skills to attain our goals. Working through challenges in our past or those in the present in a supportive, therapeutic environment can help us build a fuller and more meaningful life.

Welcome! My name is Lilian and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) with a Master of Counselling Psychology (MCP). As long as I can remember, I have felt drawn to supporting others. As a first-generation immigrant from China, I often struggled with navigating cultural stigma towards mental health, while also finding language and compassion for my experiences. I’m also deeply familiar with the challenges of navigating personal identity, relationships, and values in today’s complex landscape of sociopolitical, cultural, and religious structures. I truly believe that with the right fit counselling can be incredibly healing.

Life can be just plain hard. It can leave us with a host of emotions, good and bad. I am here to tell you there is always hope. Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is ask for help. It can be easy to feel “less than” or unworthy when you lose sight of who you are in the face of comparison. I believe it’s my role as a therapist to help cut through the distractions and false equivalencies and overall noise and build an impactful alliance with my clients that helps them recenter their perspectives and power to begin healing.

It was through her own personal journey that Trish came to find her expertise as a Somatic Psychotherapist; helping individuals, couples and families step into balance, health and connection so that they can live in joy, vibrancy and passion! After full recovery from a skiing accident that had her in a wheel chair for months, she began to feel uptight all the time, depressed, had unhealthy eating patterns, an autoimmune diagnosis, and disconnect in her marriage. She had forgotten all about joy, vibrance & passion or how to even reach for those things. If you have ever experienced these feelings & lack connection, Trish can help.

Too often I hear stories of people struggling in silence, battling inner thoughts and not knowing what to do with them. Shrouded in fear and shame, they do their best to navigate their daily lives hoping things will get better, but sometimes the struggle continues. Seeing a counsellor can help ease this burden. Whether it's about relationships, careers, family or personal challenges, talking to a trusted counsellor can be the start of offloading these troubling thoughts and allowing space for clarity, growth and direction.

Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, lonely or depressed? This time in history is such a challenge as we are less connected as humans, more stressed as individuals and overwhelmed from uncertainty. I experienced severe anxiety as a young person but was passed off as "too sensitive", creating shame for my emotions early on. My own therapeutic journey has helped me process trauma, understand people pleasing, learn to set boundaries and emotional regulation tools while working towards a healthier relationship with myself in the most authentic way possible. I wish the same for you and would be honoured to be part of your healing process.

In my practice I work to help you feel grounded in yourself, attuned to your needs, and equipped to shift behaviours that are no longer serving you, so you can meaningful changes for yourself. Together we will sort out what you think would be most helpful to you, while I hold space for the emotions and circumstances surrounding what's happening for you. Clients have shared that after conversation they feel lighter, less alone, and have tools to cope when times feel unmanageable. My aim is to support you in a way that you find helpful, and to hold an inclusive space for you where you feel safe enough to be seen and heard.

Welcome, I'm Michael. As a Registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist, I specialise in helping people find lasting relief from anxiety and OCD. I hold a Master's in Social Work from New York University, and bring over a decade of experience in the field of mental health. My own journey with anxiety began during adolescence in Vancouver. In my search for healing, I spent years studying meditation and plant medicine in Japan and Peru. Through these experiences, I learned that there isn’t a single miracle cure, but a variety of skills and strategies we can use to nurture well-being.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.

Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
